If you bought it this season, then you should have a talk with the nursery that sold it to you and find out if you have options for a refund. (asking for a replacement will probably just result in a second virused plant)

There's no way nurseries should be selling you virused roses for the prices they ask.

I ordered directly from austin. the other Austins I recieved seem fine, but evelyn has had a lot of leaves that were mostly yellow. I didn’t think abount contacting them since this one doesnt seem to be affected much by the rmv. At the pruning class I went to it was said that viruses like rmv do not spread from rose to rose outside of graphing.

For us, here in LaLa Land, this was one of those Austins that grew 14-ft tall, and only bloomed at the top of the canes. I think you have some winter, so that may not be a problem. But if I were to grow it again, I'd espalier it as a climber.

I can only hope that in my poor soil and massive radiant heat Evelyn won't grow into a jolly green giant since in both locations where I have her that would be unfortunate. If there's one thing I've learned it's that roses do whatever they want to in each garden, and never mind what anyone else's experience is.

When Clair Martin was planting Austins at the Huntington, his experience told him that if the Austin descriptions from Northern England said that plants would be 4-ft-tall or taller, they would be "Jolly Green Giants, and bloom up at the top. If they were described as under 4-ft, they might go to 5 -- or even 6-ft. but they would be manageable shrubs with good bloom production.

My own experience meshed with his.

The Huntington has lovely weather for roses. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Evelyn won't be quite as happy in my more Spartan conditions. We'll just call it an interesting experiment.

garden nut z9b I saw pics. in HMF of Evelyn with really bad Rose Mosaic Virus, but my own-root Evelyn is 100% healthy for over a decade (bought from Chamblee nursery).

I have zw grafted on multiflora that i peg because there isnt enough space.

They both bloom reliably on laterals in candelabras.

I notice that your Evelyn has much less thorns than my 12th-year own-root Evelyn (very large reddish thorns). I put up with its nasty thorns for its fabulous strong peaches scent.
