Stan, we've know each other for a very long time. While this deal, as you've said, " Is too good to be true", it probably is. It is light weigh so you'll need some way of anchoring it down. While it offers some protection during the warmer weather so plants get more light exposure, you'll have to bring them inside sooner or later. Just don't want to see you get hurt. As you may recall, I built, what I call portable greenhouses, they are made of PCV tubing and polyethylene covering. I weight them down with cement blocks I made from ready mix and USPS small Priority boxes. Depending on local cost, these are easy to assemble, easy to dis-assemble in winter and don't take up much storage space. If you can use a tape measurer and a saw they are fun to build. Mine are 6' x 8'

I may just get nothing but trouble with this offer. I think I acted foolishly buying this. Checking with my credit card to see about fraud. Giving them one week or else. Would have been better putting that $89 towards a better (real) green house. If I get it, I would mount it on a 2 x 6 treated frame with some cement blocks holding it down. I have a perfect spot in my yard protected by the wind which gets about 1/2 day sun.

Had trouble contacting order. Computer flagged it as a scam. Called credit card company and had charge removed and new credit card number. I feel so stupid. At least it didn't cost me anything. I think???

Things happen and chalk it up as an experience. I tend to be very cautious and do a bit of research first. There website name does not even show up in a plain google search with that name. Odd, I say.

So you tried contacting them and did not hear from them, I guess? I wonder if the CC company loses the money. I am guessing they may flag the vendor and share that info with others too.

Scammers are also very sophisticated these days. Eg, their website is quite slick with info, no spelling mistakes, covering a variety of standard topics. But the first thing that tipped me off was that many of the pictures on their site are pixelated and low resolution - as if someone zoomed in on a picture. And I thought why the pics are low resolution while the text is pretty good.

I don't know if it's a total scam. Harbor Freight sells a similar greenhouse that is slightly larger, 6' X 8'. I bought one 2 years ago on sale from them for $150, it's still sitting in my garage. I actually kinda forgot that I bought it until I read your post. My garage is like that warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark only less organized.

They are pretty flimsy but someone made a YouTube video on how to make them sturdier and better insulated.

So don't feel stupid, stupid is buying a greenhouse and keeping it in your garage.

James: HF is not a scam but they do sell a lot of cheap flimsy stuff. I have friends that bought the same greenhouse from HF and they have fixed it up a bit and strengthened joints and connections. They seem to be happy with it. Apparently the glazing needs replacement in a few years and needs some maintenance work. All in all if you are handy with tools and materials you can make it work for several years. I had thought of buying it and fixing it up. At the end, I think, you are better off with a PVC tube greenhouse as bikerdoc mentioned above.

I have a small greenhouse made with 1 inch metal conduit (EMT tubes) and canopy connectors. Mine is 9x8. I cover it with greenhouse plastic. I primarily use it house my bonsai plants during the winter. And to some extent extend the seasons for veges. If you buy the parts today you can do it for less than $150 probably $120. It is super strong. I can hang on to the tubes. It is now 17-18 yrs now and has rusted a bit in places. Nothing that a little sanding and paint job cannot fix. I have to replace the plastic every 4-6 years. Here is a pic

What's pretty great is how some folks went there themselves, and everyone could express their concerns. I'm glad it wasn't more and that you didn't lose. There were just gains and more awareness. Stush, you could get some shade cloth to put over the harbor freight green house. That would probably prolong the life of the panels.

I was thinking of going with EMT (thin wall) conduit bent into U-shape and making a hoop house. That's simple, easy and cover it with 6

mil uv rated plastic. I have seen these all the time when traveling to many nurseries.

Will have to check out the prices of 3/4 EMT conduit. No fittings due to bolting structure to 2 x 4 's which will double as shelves.

We have a hoop house. My uncle gave it to us, they used it for the nursery business they had. It was the half circles and pipes, we had to build the rest. This is when we first put it up 4 years ago. We put 70 % shade cloth over it in the summer

Stush: That will be an excellent idea. There are Youtube videos on how to make a jig so that you can bend the tubes so they all come out the same shape. The door is always a bit tricky. You may want to consider roll-up sides - even in spring it can get hot inside quickly. A 6 mil UV rated plastic will last 4-6 years. I bought a sheet from https://www.agriculturesolutions.com/. Minimum is 500 sq ft. They sent me more than double that - they just picked something from the warehouse and did not bother cutting to size. Very good quality sheet.

I figured to build the base with 1" EMT conduit which would be the raised beds. The 3/4" EMT bent into hoops would slip right into the 1" base and form the top. I used to be an electrician and have benders and with the slip fit, would cut down on fittings. I'll post a print once I get some of the stuff together. The hardest part I see is the ends. I see you used plywood. That would be best but would bring the cost up.

I did not use plywood for the ends. I cut same plastic for the ends oversized by a foot on all sided and put several grommets on the edge. I put on the ends first and tie it to next EMT tube and tighten them to keep the ends stretched. I have zipper door on the ends. They are available in HD that you stick to the plastic. In retrospect, they are not the best thing since those need to be reinforced as they tend to come loose. I put the main cover over next which is also oversized on each end. Then I use cheap $2 clamps to keep them in place. Everything works well except the zipper door.

I should have gone with 3/4 inch tubing myself. But I have a tendency to make everything super strong.

Slip fit will be excellent. I put 1 inch EMT into 18 inches into ground and slipped a longer 3/4 in it. The side 1 inch tube slips right over the 3/4 inch and stops when it meets the 1 inch tube in the ground. This way I can take the enitire canopy out very quickly.

The parts I used are similar to these: https://www.canopiesandtarps.com/fa4cc.html It makes life lot simpler. I believe you can buy all you need in a bundle for a decent price on ebay.

I bet you can do the whole structure under $100 and if you go hoophouse route then it will be less than $100 with the plastic. And it will be lot stronger than most cheap greenhouses you can buy.

I have four rafters spaced about 3 feet. You can go 4 feet spacing without the plastic sagging too much under snow load. You still have to keep the plastic pretty tight and stretched. Plastic expands and contracts with temperature. And you have to tighten/loosen it once in a while to keep the top cover fairly stretched.

BTW: I am Pittsburgh too - so you are welcome to come by see mine in person.

I think going to PVC pipe is cheaper and easier. Still in planing stage.

Stush: You can also find special connectors and adapters for PVC on the that allows you a lot of flexibility in designing your greenhouse. Go for 1 inch tubes at at least and keep your spans short to be able to take snow/wind loads.

Tropic, I was thinking of the 1" pvc and tee fittings. Priced at Home Depot. 10/$32.60 and tees @$1.35 plus you got to tape the pipe to keep it from interacting with the plastic sheeting. Otherwise the chlorine in PVC will interact with it. Figured 2 ft. apart with crosssecting tees plus got to install a wooden header thru the center which would be great for hanging baskets.

Good points especially about protecting the plastic sheets. You could probably use scrap sheets to wrap the tubes and tape every foot or so to keep them in place. I would be a bit careful about putting any loads on the ridge line. Probably a couple of vertical supports on the wood header would solve that problem.

A dome being one of natures strongest structures sure would make sense but recovering it again would be hard unless they sell them alone. The very top panel would be great if it removes for ventilating.

Anyhow, ran this pass the boss and she pointed out her honey-do list before I can start on this project. So maybe next year (again).

My "greenhouse" is a metal 10x20ft carport frame, like the portable cheapo ones they sell at Pep Boys for around $100 on sale, etc with a white sorta sheer roof -some come with zippered ends/sides w clear windows, etc.

We reinforce the sides with more metal posts where it goes into the ground.

I buy the 6 mil. clear Painter's Plastic on a huge roll about 20 ftx 100ft for around $98 at Home Depot. I double the plastic by folding it over to make it 12 mil which is plenty for my climate. I use a portable propane heater if we dip into the 20F at night. In March, I take the plastic off and leave the frame up.

I grow a lot of tropicals and plants that I want the seedpods to mature on. We get a few, to several freezes every winter here so I need a greenhouse for Dec, Jan and Feb only.

I used to have 2 of these frames connected together for 20x40ft but I have cut back on plants the last few yrs lol.

I dont know if you could make this work for you but someone might be able to get some ideas for a cheap ghetto greenhouse like mine lol. It has actually been through a few low strength hurricanes in the summer and several windstorms in the winter.

When I first saw those car ports, That was the first idea that came to me. In zone 9 you might need the heaver cloth as shade. Mike on the C&S forum uses a winter pool cover over his for added insulation for winter. Those pool covers that have the air pockets all thru them.

I have potted Longan and Starfruit trees, some tender potted citrus and Plumeria that can lend shade here. I do like shade cloth. I use it over my chicken runs to give them some shade plus keep the hawks and eagles out. It works better than tarps because the air and rain goes through and doesnt collect and pull them down like the tarps.
