Were they rootbound when planted/?

I've been looking at dwarf purple weigela cultivars at outlets here and the stock of Spilled Wine I encountered was by far the smallest of those I have seen - the retailer was sent dinky little things, looking like cut sprigs one would wear or put in a small vase. Suggesting this one is quite slow to size up.

That said I can see current season's growth all over yours in your shots - a plant that is not growing each year is either dead or dying back.

Although I might expect them to be a bit wider, the height looks to be right on (24-36"). Flowering may be more intense in greater sun........IME, the more sun these receive, the heavier they bloom.

I can't recall if they were root bound but I always tease the roots pretty heavily when I plant anything new. I may have put a little compost but I usually mix that with existing soil.

wow, I just had these planted by a nursey.. .and mine are about the same size. I had 5 done... 2 look healthy, one is okay, and 2 are really dry :(
