I have tile in kitchen and laundry area (due to many dogs and many kids, and also because I like easy-care), and engineered wood everywhere else downstairs.

I will also note, that when we started the project, we wondered things like, Will it look choppy? Where do you end the tile and start the wood? Here? Or 6" over to here? Would it look better if it was all wood? Will it look stupid? And so, here's what I learned about having 2 different flooring surfaces. It looks great. We had them installed at the same time by an EXCELLENT local flooring store. They showed us where to stop and start. They helped us choose the direction of the flooring (just in case I questioned myself), and best of all, they butted the tile up against the wood without transition strips (also, no quarter round on the baseboards).

The tile is not the same color as the wood, but it has the same "tone" (medium in color, unobtrusive, matching grout) and rustic feel, so we feel it complements. Everything is easy care, so I'm happy about that.

Now, you can take notice in others' homes and see how you feel about their choices, or even whether you notice it much at all.

p.s. We have wood-tone cabinets in our kitchen, and I also felt that the wood floors would lend itself to "too much wood" in there. So tile felt like the right aesthetic choice for us as well.

I have the same wood flooring throughout most of the house, with tile in the bathrooms and laundry room. Our main floor all flows together but there is separation via walls between the living room and entry way and the kitchen/dining/tv area. I like having all the same flooring for the cohesion it brings to the house.
