Help my clematis fill out?!?!

This past spring, I planted my first clematis: a Guernsey Cream. I read that especially in this first season, I must pinch the new growth in order to prevent it from being sparse and leggy at the bottom, like the one that was already here when I moved into the house.

So, I've been clenching my teeth and pinching out the new growth every few weeks. And fertilizing with Tomorite. My Guernsey Cream has been growing well- but no new branches. I am still pinching back the same two branches that were there when I planted it in March. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't I have at least one new branch by now?

The photos show Guernsey after a recent pinching. I've seen her twice as tall as this when she hasn't been snipped in a bit.
