Olive picking season has started

Picked a few olives this morning and they will be marinated for table use. These are arbequina olives.
Small but plentiful and this is the first year my trees are producing. They are also very precocious,
other varieties of same size trees are still not mature enough. Maybe next year.

And here is the final product, already half gone. Not to worry already will be able to pick another batch by end of week.
Per my MIL olives were crushed and pitted (she used some kind of hammer) then soaked in water for 2 days with water changed daily. Then mixed with some EVOO, salt,pepper,dry oregano. This can be amended as preferred with garlic, red pepper, etc.
This is considered rustic Italian food, along with crusty bread (ciabatta) some 'primo sale formaggio' aka fresh pecorino (sheep's milk cheese) and whatever kind of greens can be scrounged up from the garden to be dipped in a oil and vinegar dressing, a bottle of Marsala wine and the shade of a grape arbor. That's why people in the Meditarrenean basin live to be much older than major metropolitan areas.

What a beautiful tree. I wish I had somewhere to plant mine, but alas, I'll have to pass it on to someone who has more sun and space.

So olive trees do well in north FL? Didn't know that. I grew up in Greece, the world capital of olives and olive products and would live to have one.

Bea, you should be able to grow them in Jax. I think your area gets at least 300 hrs chilling and that (I believe) is the minimum required for olives to set buds. If you have a roomy sunny spot and a couple of years worth of patience, why not try? Steady feeding will push these trees up pretty quick. Some nurseries have these arbequina trees already with olives but somewhat pricey.

Bea, you can have mine. I'm serious. It's an Arbequina someone gave me, and i have nowhere to put it. Plus, I won't be here but another year, so I need to find a good home for it.
