Kitchen decisions so far...

So a lot of decision making has been taking place around here! Kitchen renovation begins ~ Sept 1, a couple weeks sooner than expected, but that’s a good thing.

Cabinets have been ordered. Here’s the door style, in SW Filmy Green. I’m in love with this color.

Counter will be soapstone. DH and I are going to look at slabs later this week. Sink will be stainless.

Faucet:

Light fixtures and cabinet knobs will be antique brass. I’m waiting for a sample knob to arrive; I want oval/egg knobs with a rectangular backplate. This is my inspiration:

Lights ordered:

for kitchen table

and for sink (this is small, 9x6”)

And I THINK I have found my backsplash tile! Taking the sample with me when I go to look at the soapstone later this week.

Another tile I liked below. Both are marble. But I really really like the above tile. Kinda reminds me of chicken wire!

I liked this subway-ish tile too (comes in lots of colors — I‘d get white/cream).

The appliances aren’t exciting. Well, I’m mildly excited about my microwave drawer.

Wall color will be white/cream?

Wow. Everything's gorgeous! I agree with Feathers on the backsplash. Your first choice is perfect.

Like the first choice in backsplash or third. I feel like 2nd choice, little skinny tiles is played out. Can wait to see progress once the actual contruction starts!! How exciting.

Perfect choices all around! Your instinct about the back splash is right on - go for your first choice and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it looks good with your soapstone.

Great choices! Chickenwire splash all the way. Those knobs and backplate are fantastic. Can you share the source?

Looks great, and so fitting for your house. I’ll make it unanimous so far with the chicken wire backsplash.

Oh how fun - I haven't followed a kitchen re-do since back in the day when I was TKO on the Kitchens forum doing mine.

Thanks everyone! Shee, I don’t know the source of the hardware in that pic. It’s a kitchen in the UK and I tried to dig around to see if I could find any reference to the hardware source, but no. So I have ordered a sample egg knob and separate backplate from one of the online knob places (drawing a blank on the name) and crossing my fingers. Of course the knobs are probably going to cost more than my new stove but...whatever.

    Oh yay, what fun : ) .

Another vote for the chicken wire tiles!

I don’t know the source of the hardware in that pic. It’s a kitchen in the UK and I tried to dig around to see if I could find any reference to the hardware source, but no.

It's a Humphrey Munson kitchen and I've seen HM call the hardware Quilp, which I suspect might be their own line.

You might want to check Armac Martin to see if they have something similar.

Yes, Humphrey Munson! and I see the same hardware used in their other kitchens so I bet you’re right, Becky. I just looked at Armac Martin and didn’t see the same knob/backplate, which is probably good because the cost would have forced me to pull DD out of college already and she hasn’t even left yet.

I have now ordered about 5 different sample knobs, hoping one of them is right. Not all are like the knobs in the pic above, but have a similar feel.

I have Armac Martin brass pulls that I bought from Lee Valley -- first in 1999 for our old house when we remodeled the kitchen and then the other year for the new house (same exact pulls, I'm nothing if not consistent lol) -- that weren't cheap but not crazy expensive either. It might be worth a look to see what Lee Valley has.

Don't forget that soapstone has a pattern. I wouldn't order your backsplash until your soapstone is installed and you've applied whatever finish you're going to onto it. I do like the pattern of the chickenwire however.

So when picking your slab, do you pick one that you love as a separate piece or one that goes with that chicken wire tile.

We actually chose our soapstone this morning. I brought the tile sample with me. Very happy with my choice! Much if the veining in the stone is the greenish color of my cabinets.

    Picture?

    last modified: 7 years ago

The pics I took aren’t great, which is why I didn’t post them. The stone is prettier IRL. And the cabinet color didn’t come out accurately at all. But here they are!

My first impulse is to not oil the counters, but I’ll decide for sure once they’re in.

While I love the cabinet doors, those corners are almost impossible to clean because dirt/dust gathers there which is noticeable on light cabs. Dogs make it worse. :)

    Very Pretty!

I think your choices are beautiful with that soapstone! My instinct would be to oil the counters but you are wise to wait and see how it looks in place. Looking forward to seeing the final look!

Is this the fastest selection of kitchen elements ever? :) For cleaning cabinet corners, I imagine there must be tricks like tape to pick up hair or paint brushes for dust?

It's because she started without us!

Tartan, LOL, I've been building a kitchen Pinterest page since we moved into this house last summer...so I was just working behind the scenes. Once I picked the cabinet color, everything else was an easy decision. I am excited to see it all in place.

DH just retired at the ripe old age of 57, so I will delegate kitchen cabinet dusting to him. :-)

Now who wants to come over and help me empty my kitchen cabinets while simultaneously packing DD up for college? She leaves and kitchen starts all at the same time.

Love your choices. We have soapstone in our kitchen and love it. Originally it was very pale grey. It was recommended to wipe with water to see what it would look like oiled. When oiled the veins really popped.

Love, love, love the cabinet color. I am so tired ( in fact dedtired) of white everything. Perfect choices. My cabinets are different but have that slight molding and keeping them clean hasn’t been a problem.

Update...here’s what it looks like now! Nice, right??

Few more decisions made, or almost made.

Wall color, I think BM Mayonnaise.

    Hardware.

I decided to use a combination of these two pulls. No knobs because I just couldn’t come up with something I liked. I really like this look.

    I‘m considering this table.

We’ll have a built in window seat plus two chairs. Thinking about these possibly in turquoise (the finish is “aged” with some brown showing thru). but they also come in a green that looks close to my cabinet color (I ordered swatches today).

Hope to be finished in early Nov.

My friend Wendy had kitchen cabinets nearly identical in color. For the more than ten years I visited her in that house, every time I walked into her kitchen I fell in love with the color again. Great choice.

I can’t even tell you how many samples I looked at...and ended up ordering from Rejuvenation.

So, we bought this table. I love it.

It will be in front of a window seat, and we’ll have 2 chairs. We are at our summer place this week and I plan to check all my favorite antique/consignment shops for chairs. I found a chair I think I like at RH, but will see what else I can find. Also still waiting for samples from the Ballard chair above. The chair(s) will primarily be used by DH, who is 6’4” so a dainty little chair won’t work!

The RH chair — also comes in a darker finish.

I have several fabric samples for the seat cushion, sorry no pics, but I like a few of them. So I jumped ahead and ordered a pillow and will see which cushion fabric works best with it. Love the colors.

Construction is moving right along with no significant issues so far...fingers crossed! Cabinets are being delivered in about 2 weeks.
