Ornamental "onion" houseplant?

Central (rural) NJ zone 6b/7a. Delaware River town
This was given to me as a gift and ive never even thought about what its real name is.
she calls them "curly onion bulbs". seems to be tropical, likes to stay moist and prefers bright indirect sunlight
Anyone know the real name of this little fella?
