It's a bit tight of an area so I would choose a rectangular shaped table with chairs on either end and possibly both sides having benches that could sit 3 on each side? They can then push in more flush to the table when not in use giving you more clearance through the traffic area.

How about color of table? And should the legs be a different color than top, any suggestions?

I have a smallish dining area and opted for a racetrack shape. I generally only would be seating four but wanted the ability to seat 8 if need be. Because it's an elongated oval it doesn't take up as much space and can seat 8 more or less comfortably. within a smaller footprint than a rectangle.

I also opted for a pedestal because legs would also have limited placement of chairs for comfortable seating.

I'm not a pro but you might consider a glass or marble top and perhaps metallic finished legs. Glass is visually lighter in a small area.

Not a pro, but I just want to suggest that a glass top dining table, from my experience of having such, is a pain to keep clean and free of prints, etc.
