Jetstream Hydrangea

Is anyone familiar with Jetstream Hydrangea? What do you think? Are they fussy or relatively low-maintenance? Reliable bloomer? In what part of the country are you and how much shade do they get?


I'm looking to replace some big leaf hydrangeas that just haven't been good bloomers. I guess it's too cold here. I'm in Kansas. Lot of cold, lots of heat, lots of wind, sometimes dry. They'd get shade most of the day, some from the side of a house, some from a tree, usually bright shade.


I'd also consider Ruby Slippers although I like the size of Jetstream a little better.

    I have not tried Jet. No one has sold it locally since its introduction and the wholesaler does not mail order like Proven Winners. I can only find Munchkin or Ruby Slippers for sale, which are similar in specs, so that is the route I went. My oakleaf hydrangeas have been more reliable bloomers than the mopheads for me but, do note that my zone is 7b/8a, which is important because I am not near their root hardiness limits (Z5) like you in Kansas.

    Oakleafs develop flower buds in late Summer or Fall and are advertised as root hardy up to zone 5 but so do mopheads... and you know how that worked for you (they need winter protection in cold zones to bloom reliably)... So, you may have to investigate how well they bloom in your Zone 6 or 5 in Kansas. My assumption is that in Z6 that they may be ok but, at the edge of usda zone 5 with 4, for example, it may not be root hardy (or it may be root hardy but not bloom hardy) if winter turns into a Zone 4 Winter for a week.

    If bloom reliability is an issue for you with mopheads, investigate who else (people, city gardens, etc) has oakleaf hydrangeas near you planted outside. Then try growing it outside if others say it works/blooms for them... or grow it in a pot. You can also go with either the arborescens (check Wee White) or paniculata (check Bobo, Little Quickfire, etc) hydrangea route instead. If you do, be aware that their foliage may not be nowhere as nice in the Fall as the oakleaf's Fall foliage. But they will be more root and bloom hardy.

    Paniculatas can handle more sun but all the others need morning sun (afternoon and evening shade), dappled sun or bright full shade.
