What zone are you in? It is hard to give advice unless we know how cold your winters do get.

My cold room in the basement has an outside vent and if I do not close it in the winter my potatoes do freeze. Your idea has possibility but you might have to put in a remote thermometer to watch the temps. I do that and when it gets too cold I go in and close the vent or crack the door so the heat from the house can warm it a little.

If you had a window to the basement you could use that to regulate the temps.

I am in Zone 2/3. There is no basement, but potentially I could put a vent off the wood stove into the cold room....hmm

I guess I assumed since this was 'far north' the winters would be similar.

Winters are similar but some Far North are zone 4, some of us, like you and me zone 2, I was just unsure.

I would certainly try it, even if it gets colder than you like it may not reach those temps until well into Dec/ Jan. Or, you may only have to worry when it gets lower than -30C, that is the temp. I usually need to watch my cold room and open the door.

A vent sounds interesting, with a damper you could open and close. Gee now you got me thinking.
