I think if you like what you have and it works for you, keep it. We have a console of sorts and I have things stored in it and also use the top of it with a bowl for keys and things. So it's functional for us, but, if you don't need a console, then I think ottoman works great with some art.

I actually have a bookcase there, with a keybowl, and some art above. I needed soace for books, a place to display art, and somewhere to dump the keys. What do you need?

Certainly not important. They're usually merely decorative with little practical functionality (oh sure, there might be lamps or a place to stash keys). Mine is where I display Native American baskets. I like my display, but it isn't a vital part of my foyer.

Your current setup sounds great! No, you shouldn't put a console table if you don't need/want/use one.

The entry should be thought of like every other room in your house: what's my function? what do I need here?

Do you need a place to set keys/purse? Take off shoes? Store items?

Do you only want to set the tone for guest arriving at your home? (Or all of the above!)

Console tables are only a fancy drop-zone. :)
