Petruska, hi. The plant needs shade so I keep it on the north side of my house under the eaves. Taccas don't like tight roots but like wide, shallow pots so we potted it in a metal pot we had that is about 2' high and 2.5' wide. Bat plants like moisture. You don't want to let them dry. It's planted in regular potting soil with some compost mixed in. I also fertilize it a couple times a month.

I don't know in what zone you live but they don't like temps below 45-50 for any length of time.

Bea, did you buy it locally or mail order? Also do you leave it out all winter. I’m in Flagler Beach, Zone 9b and we have been in the 30s at times. Would you bring it in or cover it? Thanks for any info. I will need to get one!

wow! 2' x 2.5 ' planter! that probably explains plenty of blooms :). and you feed it well too...

just curious, does the pot have holes in the bottom? it must, since it rains in FL a lot, right? it's like a tub :). a suppose baby tub can be used like a planter, otherwise I've never seen such big metal pots. interesting idea.

Until last spring it was in a 10 gallon (more or less) pot and we had to use a hand dolly to wheel it in for the winter. But it had grown so rootbound in its pot that we had to repot it. Just cutting part of the rootball and adding fresh soil wouldn't do it.

Yes, it has holes in the bottom. I have no idea what this container was originally. My son found it in a trash pile years ago and thought it would make a nice planter.

We could have repotted it in a slightly bigger pot but in another year or two when we had to repot it again we would be unable to move it even with a dolly. We are getting older, it's getting harder to do. We made the decision to plant it in the planter knowing it will need to be covered this winter because we regularly get down into the 30s at night for several nights. We plan to erect 4 stakes around it and wrap plastic on them rather than draping it over the plant Because the stems snap easily. And of course we'll provide a heat source.

kimpa since you are in Flagler, E.F.G. Orchids in DeLand usually have them. I think they are open to the public Tuesday to Sunday?

I was at EFG a few weeks ago (my main hobby is orchids) and I didn't see any.

bea, too bad they don't have them now. They had them in their booth at the annual Mothers Day show at the fairgrounds. They had both white and black. I almost bought a black one but talked myself out of it. They are so interesting.
