Furnishing and decorating a mountain cabin

last modified: 6 years ago

I recently bought a weekend mountain home and am overwhelmed trying to furnish it. The home was built in 2006 -- great house but the finishes are not our taste. We are not going to update any of it (yet) so trying to work with it.

The main living space has a bold, shiny, dark brown/grey tile that we dislike and are trying to cover with area rugs wherever possible. We bought a light grey sectional and rug for the living room. One more piece is going to be added to the sectional to make it longer on the side parallel to the staircase.Seeing it in the space now, I wish I'd bought darker since now it appears to contrast too much. Too bad - already purchased. I could possibly move the rug to a bedroom if it is too problematic.

The dining room rug is definitely going to be repurposed to another room - the turquoise (my favorite color) does not work with this tile. We will also get rid of the velvet chairs. Thinking a heavier leather chair instead, though we've been put off by the price of them.

What else can I do to make these rooms work? What color rug should I get for the dining room? Any colors that seem like they would work for accent pillows?

What do you like about the room?

Good question! I like the open space and layout. I love the high ceilings and I like the wood on the ceiling. I like the big sliding glass doors onto the front patio.

A three seat coach would have given you more floor space and just as many seats. The view from above gives you a great way to see that.

Keep reminding yourself that this is a weekend mountain retreat, not your full-time home. You have the great opportunity to make the kind of decorating choices that you think might be too colorful or too different than what you'd normally choose for your everyday house. So far, you've purchased a grey sectional and a grey rug, which are fine pieces on their own, but don't say "mountain" to me. I think it's time to start adding color. Take a look at what surrounds you outdoors and bring in some of the color from outside. When I think of a mountain home, I immediately think of Hudson Bay blankets--greens, yellow, reds, blues. You can use that in bold rugs, pillows, upholstery, etc. You already have a more rustic dining table and coffee table and I would suggest going more colorful and less formal in your next selections.

The big stainless fireplace makes me think this cabin has a contemporary style? Is that so on the outside? I would go more sleek and contemporary if that is the case. Right now, the furnishings look pretty suburban, but your turquoise could pump it up a bit. I don't see why turquoise won't work with that tile floor. Washable rugs may be helpful for the kind of traffic you have in a cabin.

Oh, you are living my dream! I would love to have a small mountain retreat and I agree that adding color is in order. Your sectional sofa will let you go in so many directions. Here are a few inspiration pics for you

I also think red is a great punch of color and reminds me of fall, holidays and when I would most likely love to be cosy in a mountain retreat.

And here is a great source for pillow covers if you like to use your own inserts, I do think your turquoise is great as well. Add some green with it to speak to the great outdoors.

Try going around the rooms with a bunch of colorful Post-Its. One color for love it, one color for okay, and one color for discard. Once you see how things are sorted, you'll get a good idea about priorities.

Beautiful space. Does it have gorgeous views? With respect to the furniture, have you thought to turn the sofa 90 degrees so that one of the sides is against the window? I would not push it right against the window, but leave some space to walk around and access the window seat. That way, the seating area would be much more open to the fireplace and rest of the space.

Thanks all! @Marta, interesting idea to switch the sectional orientation. We were not wanting to block the window seat, but maybe worth a try!

I appreciate all the nods to turquoise, but for some reason it doesn't seem like its working in the space. I was wondering if it is the brown/olive hues in the tile. @decoenthusiaste, I actually already purchased a similar Ruggable (https://ruggable.com/products/hesperia-teal-rug?variant=14067889766455) to use in the kitchen, but now second guessing that one too. I haven't been back up the mountains to try it in the house yet.

I'm wondering if I should try a red rug under the dining room table or go grey like LR or something more beige/brown to better match the floor?

The house's style I think falls into "contemporary." My style preference would be rustic modern or rustic farmhouse. I think my husband prefers mid-century modern. We aren't going for "mountain" but right now it does feel like we've swung too far away from it.

Thanks! I love that @groveraxle! Is that a rug I could buy somewhere?

Also any suggestions for dealing with the grey couch and rug that I already bought? Throws or pillows that would help? I could move the rug to my bedroom - it needs a big rug too and has a wood floor, so I think would work. It's much more expensive than I'd planned to spend in my bedroom, so might have to look cheap for something for the living room.

I already owned these 2 rugs in 8x10, which are being used in the other bedrooms. Would these work in the space? The new LR rug is 9x12, so maybe 8x10 would be too small anyway.

We have a townhouse in the mountains in Colorado which is vintage 1978...we gut remodeled, after using it for a season so we were sure about the things we wanted to change. But we were stuck with a lot of 1978 features, so had to embrace that vibe when we decorated. Grover is right about not fighting what you have. My first thought is to change the light fixtures...Hubbardton Forge, although expensive, would be a good place to look for ideas. Using the search term “mountain modern” in Houzz should also get you to some inspiration pictures. It’s a pity they sealed the slate...I wonder if you could get it stripped....the natural look would get you a long way towards rustic mid mod!

I was going to place the Alvarez rug in your living room...then realized that appears to be the rug you have in there now. It blends into an indistinct gray. I think you could use something bolder there, with a larger pattern. Perhaps even try the rug from your dining room there.

    Thanks for these!

Yes, I own 2 of the Alvarez - one in grey and one in "garden" with the rust and blue colors.
