repot the fig tree now? Zone 6b

I've got three good sized healthy looking fig trees from a friend a week ago. The trees definitely need a big pot as they are in 5-gallon pots and the roots have considerable growth outside the pots and into the lawn. I heard winter dormancy season is the best time to trim the root and repot fig trees so I decided to wait. However I noticed the leaves of two trees turn noticeably yellow this week. There are practically no soil in the pot where they are. Should I repot them now? Would I confuse the fig tree by asking them to grow new roots and then two months later ask them to stop growing and go hibernating?
