Overwintering geraniums in a planter.

This year I bought two Max Frei geraniums and two Gaura plants for containers. I do not want them to die over winter so I was wondering if I should bring them into the garage or wrap the planters with something for insulation for winter. I will bring them near the garage and keep them protected by the overhang so they don’t get so much wind and snow dumped on them. I will cover with leaves when the time comes. Should I cut the geraniums? They never really grew much. The Gaura will need cutting back for sure. It was just so pretty all Summer long. I Have not done anything to either one yet because we are still warm here in Chicago. I get much needed help on garden web reading so many other posts. Please advise me the best plan of action. Thanks in advance.
