seed maturity varies among varieties. 6-8 weeks is the rule. fragrants are tough even with pod set, seed viability is around 10%.

i'm always hopeful and collect them just to see whats in them once they dry.

this is a tough year around here.

the mice are voraciously stripping scapes of pods as they ripen.luckily i have mass quantities even if i lose 25%. i still get seed to grow

sugar water has never worked for me. others says under lights and in a cloner with clonex nutrients they will finish.

I've also had a tough time getting to the second generation from invincible. the f1s from it have diluted fragrance and are mostly sterile

I had to leave my NY garden early ,mid September. So I had to pick seed pods earl. My question is if the pods split open and the seeds are black , are they ok?

Are they fat?

sunnywood4bChazyNY you are good to go. split pods with black seeds and a bump or kernel on them should sprout. keep them as dry as possible until sowing. paper lunch bags usually do the trick.

lindalana 5b Chicago if seeds are almost done sugar water may help finish them. ..but it may not be any better than just storing them in a bag to wind down. it's when they are 2-4 weeks shy of maturing that sugar water on its own just doesn't supply enough energy to the pod to develop the seeds.

thus those using cloners more or less are employing cloning techniques that allow the scapes to self produce that energy. extra lighting especially in the right spectrum makes a difference. as well as optimum nutrients.
