Eggshell paints will have a bit of a sheen - just like a shell of an egg - and can be quite reflective especially in areas where there is a lot of light. While they are more washable than flatter paints they do highlight any imperfections. Instead, I would choose a matte finish. It's right between a flat and an eggshell and can be cleaned while not being too glossy.

I use Ben Moore and always choose eggshell for the walls, UNLESS the walls are rough, which yours are. I would have recommended a flat finish.

Thanks all - the painter refinished with a matte finish and made it all right. I realize it's a matter of taste, but I don't like shiny walls!
