Hi Will. How are you going to use them? Once I get the Buckthorn under control, I was thinking of using Witchazel and Redbud as understory trees where a beam of sunlight would find them. I’d like to include Pagoda Dogwood, but I think they’d struggle in our dry upland conditions. The never ending deer pressure wouldn’t help either.

Is Vernal Witchazel generally considered more ornamental than H. virginiana? I’m pretty site the Asian-types are considered cream of the crop.

I bought out the Grape Fizz cultivar. They will be used as the shrub backdrop.

Seven Son flower and Red Oak are the specimens.

Likely layer Spilled WIne Weigela in front of Grape Fizz then Rozanne Geranium in front of Spilled Wine.

The asian species are a bust in my experience. vernalis is just as ornamental with the wide range of flower colors and fall colors. I have an Autumn Embers turning a deep burgandy right now.

I like virginiana as well if you want yellow flowers in fall - just a different timeframe.

I just picked up a Harvest Moon from Broken Arrow to extend the blooming timeframe as I have the species as well.

That's a detailed plan! I actually have a vernal witchhazel in the back border, but I planted it too close to a dwarf river birch, which is dwarf only in height. It is eveloping the witchhazel.
