I keep mine in water until they have several good roots. sometimes it takes 1 month , sometimes I leave them there for 2-3 months. but then I transfer them into pure perlite and keep it flooded like 1.5" on bottom so they can transition better. the roots do not decline or rot. and it's easier to keep them moist this way, as perlite dries up fast and requires constant watering. sometimes my cuttings don't get to the mix for 6mo :) but they grow fine.

I do add liquid fertilizer and peroxide (1tsp per quart) to keep water fresh , so once they are in flooded perlite, a don't rinse them, just a add a little water from time to time.

sometimes I root long vines and then keep them tented , so they do not loose leaves. So in my view there is no rush to put yours in the mix before you have more roots.

I wait 'til their roots are at least one inch long & then I pot them up, rarely smaller than that. Sometimes I forget & the roots get longer in the water, but that's fine. I might trim it back when I do pot it up, to fit the pot.
