First Blooms from Tiny Bands

In August I ordered 3 varieties of tiny bands from Rogue Valley, varieties that are hard to obtain. To my surprise, each of them has given it’s first bloom!

Here are the twiggy little bands from Rogue Valley, my friend and I each got Typhoo Tea, Treasure Trail and Geranium Red. An additional ‘mystery rose’ was complimentary.

    Geranium Red

Paul Barden’s Treasure Trail...the is a lively orange undertone to this bloom that the camera did not capture

Typhoo Tea : brilliant and unique colors, amazingly intense and complex scent. Doesn’t smell like parent Fragrant Cloud, there is a strong lemon tea scent that is very special.

    Deserves another pic:

Another hard to find variety, Distant Thunder from Heirloom. You can see the Distant Drums parentage in the color, it has nice fragrance.

I will add I hope the gallicas like it here.

I also regret now turning down the free rose. What was I thinking?

I love looking at all the new little bands, Sheila, a promise of great things to come! Three Barden’s, lucky you! I really wanted Golden Buddha based on Lisa’s pics, too, alas they were sold out. I never turn down a free mystery rose, silly you.

Ben, I have looked at Paul's Treasure Trail but didn't order it because I was nervous about its thorns. I'm glad I can admire it in your garden now.

Sheila, I'm jealous when you said "I just went over there..." to RVR. On the other hand, if I'm that close to it, pretty soon I'll even have potted roses in the living room and my husband and the roses won't put up with that, lol. Helen

Treasure Trail is cute, but I had no idea it be so prickly!

I have a friend that keeps 300 potted plants in the garage...mostly fragrant Asian shrubs. Her husband grudgingly parks outside and complains about her plants all the time. She doesn’t hear him at all, goes in one ear, out the other as she continues root cuttings for more plants.

How exciting Ben! Can’t wait to see more blooms.

I’m with bay area girl...Sheila, how cool that must be to be able to see all their stock up close! I love your new babies, and look forward to seeing how you incorporate them into your gorgeous garden. :-)

Perma, one can look around the grounds at RVRs but they send a worker to grab the roses. They don't have it set up to walk around and look at the baby plants. I would like that, but probably people back in the roses could cause problems. Not you or me, but I could see it. They were very gracious.

    Perma

Thank you, new little roses are very exciting for me.

    Sheila

Does J&P ( or anyone else) still have growing fields in the Rogue Valley?

I know David Austin, Certified and perhaps others have fields in Tyler TX which is driving distance for me, but I’ve never seen the fields themselves. I do visit Chamblees and Certified’s retail sale, nothing like visiting a grower!

Ive had mixed results with RVR sometimes they are good, sometimes Ive been sent the wrong rose, last time I got sent a band with gall so bad it, I could barely get it out of the pot. They are slow to respond on problems and sometimes dont at all. When its good, its very good and when its bad, its horrid :/

I’m envious of you, too then, Ben, so near to all those growers. If you do go, please take photos and share your adventure with us! :-)

Ben, I bet not as far as rose fields growing here. Kordes roses had an operation here with chris on this forum giving input, but she and her husband retired.

It is really amazing how fast they bloom isn't it? They just really want to grow and thrive and bloom! Yours are beautiful and look very happy!

How disappointing to find crown gall on a new rose, it’s happened to me before too on a large new bare-root.

    Perma,

I’m tempted to jump a fence or two to see those growing fields, they’re not visible from the road so far as I know.

    Sheila,

I remember Chris had some fantastic pics, you live in a great place for rose culture. I saw the other thread where at least one of your Bardens was not true to variety, that’s a shame.

    Seil

thank you, I’m surprised and pleased that the bands have bloomed. When they arrived I thought it’d be a challenge just to keep them alive.

Jackson and Perkins never had a growing field here. That was all done in Wasco California

What we did have was a test garden and packing facility

The test garden was so much fun to tour through

I fell in love with so many that never made it

They had test panel growers in your gardens

I know that many of you were part of that program

The garden is still there but sadly neglected . I go visit occassionally but I am always irritated there is such limited upkeep

Thanks Kristine, good to know the growing fields were always in Wasco. I guess there is a longer growing season and a bit warmer. I’ve driven past Wasco, the irrigated parts grow really nice edibles and ornamentals, but left to its own devices the land is like barren desert.
