Kitchen Remodel Lighting mis

Remodeling back side of the house from Family Room thru kitchen into mud room and finally half bath. For the record, losing my mind....

With that out of the way, here are my questions, concerns, challenges..

Project involves Recessed lighting, Pendants, Undermount Cabinet Puck or Bar Lighting and Interior Glass Cabinet Lighting (wood shelves not glass)

kitchen is rectangular shape 18' x 11.5' with a small island 42" x 24"

I want to do toros 5" recessed flanged dimmable lighting in Kitchen and Family room and add pendant lights over island and another light over a Bar height 36" kitchen table.

  • how many recessed lights in a 18 x 11 kitchen
  • do i add 'something' over the sink (recessed or pendant)
  • what about lighting that accents the gas stove and the range hood 30" shiplap walnut
  • what is best kind of hardwired under cabinet lighting choice? puck or light bar
  • do i use rope light or tape light inside of the three glass cabinets
  • how many pendants and what size over a small kitchen island
  • what is the 'warmth' color factor? i don't want yellow or blue

Any comments, ideas, solutions greatly appreciated

I like a kitchen that really lights up...I have 21 can lights in my kitchen/dining area and that is about right for that room, which is around 38' long x 12' wide. The area has lots of windows and I like to light the kitchen so that it doesn't appear too dark compared to the view to the outside.
The amount of your window space is something you want to take into consideration. Also, you'll want to give consideration to the K (Kelvin temperature) of the lights. I like low K (a warm glow, like the old tungsten light bulbs) at night but that will likely give you an annoying contrast with the cool (blueish) daylight coming thru the windows (which is about 5,500k, more if the day is cloudy). I used can lights with a rating of 4,000K and I find that works best for my kitchen. I have two can lights directly over my sink (on a separate switch) and that has worked out well. You don't want to be standing at the sink and casting a shadow on your work, which might happen if you have low-output pendants over the sink and stronger lights behind you.

thanks Daniel. the warmth is certainly a big concern of mine. natural light is not a problem for me since we have a lovely glass french door with side lights and 5 floor to ceiling lights in the accompanying Family Room.

I am intrigued with the two can lights over the sink... we are adding a 30" farm sink that sits in front of a 46" wide kitchen window... as you positioned the lights above the sink does this throw enough light to see clearly on a dark winter's night? I was thinking of a pendant light over the sink...

Yes, the two LED can lights give plenty of light on the sink. I don't think you'd need more than two can lights above the sink but I wouldn't use just one as it could create annoying shadows. If you do use pendant lights, I would use ones that accommodate light bulbs that shoot the light straight down and not off to the sides.

Oh, straight down. Didn’t think of that. But coincidentally the lights I like accommodate that directional concept
    Thanks
