The size of this pot is a little bit bigger (not much) than the one that was sold to me, so adding compost affects the side as well
But from what I'm understanding, adding dry compost on the bottom/side doesn't affect the plant because the rootball will still be covered in moist compost and the newly added dry compost will absorb that moisture and then I'll water the plant sooner than expected?

You're over complicating this. Just take out the rootball and add more compost wherever it's needed. Bottom or sides. Moisten the compost before adding if you think it's too dry. Or not if you think that's better.

I did this today (with asparagus densiflorus, yours is A. setaceus), had to shatter pot to get it out...and into a newer bigger home. No worries, they're tough as old leather.
