What is this bug?

We live in Southern California, and today our son (4 yrs) came home with this bug on him. We tried looking it up, but cannot identify it. Can anybody help?

It was around 1/8" long and had many tiny legs that were so fine, it looked like hair. Sorry for the poor image quality, it's the only pic we got.
