I would paint the cabinets white because they are so similar in color to your floors. And maybe a pop of color on your island base? Something you pull from the countertop colors. And you could pick that color up on the backsplash. And if you ever replace your counters, make sure to get enough overhang so you could sit at it with stools. You could put corbels or two legs to support the counter. You could always replace just the island countertop, you could possibly find a remnant, it wouldn’t be that expensive.

a few simple things.

replace the boob light. If you can't afford to do recessed canned lights right now, then remove that current light and replace it w/something more functional.

many diff styles, (go for at least 3 bulbs of 75W or more) but here are a few (to match your SS)

the next thing I'd do is finish off that island with some molding and paint. many ways to do this and many how to's online (it's not difficult. just search " how to trim your small island" )

if you do this, you'll have to paint the island (I have the how to's for that too). But your island would look fine in a navy, a white or even a black

you could do a shiplap type of trim, or just a simple trim molding (below) along the bottom and the edges. gives it a much more finished look)

you could even do a beadboard

the bottom portion gets regular baseboard molding.

then you could bring in a couple of stools for seating

You need a lot more lighting and that boob light needs to go in the trash if budget is a concern then do a nice LED track light , why ORB hardware just do stainless hope the new fridge is counter depth a new larger counter on the island in a plain material in one of the colors from the counters in the rest of kitchen Then you could add some cool stools and maybe paint the island cabinets a color you like. Remove the 4” backsplash and do a nice glass subway tile .
