HELLPPP! Kitchen Update

we are redoing our very out dated kitchen. We started with having the floors replaced so we currently have antique barnwood vinyl planks throughout. I also purchased new countertops in white ice granite. Now that I have them home, I'm thinking they may clash with the floor. Replacing the cabinets doesnt fit in our budget right now so we plan to just paint these but dont know what color will help tie the floors & counters together & make them look okay together. Picture one kinda shows everything. the light grey color in the top right is what color we planned to paint the walls.

Light colored cabinets
Dark colored cabinets
Neither- return the counters & pick something different

you mean you bought in stock laminate counters in a granite look pattern. If a redo of everything is much further down the road see if you can work some upgraded counter like corian or real granite at entry point pricing. the counter you show is just okay....but a slightly higher price ( or IKEA butcher block counters), would expand your options and do more if you are talking several yrs before further renovation . No to painting cabs ...it's not worth it. Floor and counters are enough at this point . Get some pretty floor runners, a new light fixture, new hardware, window treatment and just save. The cabinets , as is , will last longer than if you "just paint them" as you say. The floor looks nice just restrain yourself from piecemeal way of changing more things....it can give you problems and waste your valuable Time.

I voted for the dark cabinets, but I am very iffy about painting cabinets (iffy about the longevity ). To be totally honest, I think that the flooring and the cabinets do not work together. The countertop seems to work with both. If you are definitely going to paint the cabinets, I think the darker color cabinets will work with both the floor and the countertop. The grayish color you have for the walls, I think would work with all with the dark cabinets.

Congratulations on your choice to work with what you have. Sometimes it is the right choice.

In stock laminate countertops have a fabulous price point. Corian will not come anywhere near close to it. If you have a corner miter use a waterproof interior/exterior glue such as Titebond III. Be sure to put endcaps on ALL ends including those next to the stove and fridge. The countertop is designed to sit on TOP of the cabinets so be sure to purchase the build up kit or rip pieces to use for that. And finally, use a piece of 2” wide heat tape above the dishwater covering the edge of laminate and going over the mdf substrate. Taking these extra measures will ensure that your countertops will look good for many years. (Pro tip - use a heat gun to melt the glue for the end caps and then apply to the end. Using an iron will expand the end making it more difficult to trim the end cap correctly.

I think a white or antique white paint would go very well. Be sure to clean the cabinets of grease and dirt really well. And use a really good paint specifically for cabinets. It is a lot of work. Good luck.

I have white painted cabinets and they have held up for 13 years. I would spray them if possible. I would also keep the Walls a lighter color.

Painting can absolutely work if it's done correctly. I repainted some older cabinets in my kitchen and painted some new, unfinished, drawer bases. You can find tutorials on the internet and on this site.

As for the color, I'd do an off-white with a warm tone, rather than a cream or gray tone. Maybe Swiss Coffee. Get some sample pots and try the color on the wall first, or on poster board. Wait until the cabinets are painted to decide on wall color. Good luck!
