Painted stone rarely, if ever, looks good. There is enough variation in the stone colors that it will look good with almost any carpet or other flooring.
Don’t paint the stone.

If you are not loving the "tans " then why not change the rug ../ flooring ?

As the other have said, do not paint the slate; you can always redo it. It's no more than 15 SF of material.
