Fireplace stone needs help!

last modified: 6 years ago

I have asked other questions about updating this room and am working on them. However, the fireplace stone is a real eyesore. The color of the stone is conflicting with the wall color and also appears dirty with the white mantel. Any ideas of what is the easiest way to change out the stone, whitewash or put a new material over it? And if so, what material would you recommend in this situation? Thank you.

Hi there! The easiest solution would be to paint it. You can paint it the color of your trim or another complementary color. Hope this helps!

I am not sure why the colors don't seem as bad in the photo. Not an expert in warm and cool colors, but if I were to guess, I would say the stone is warm and the wall color is cool and they fight one another in real life vs photo view. If painted, could it be the same color as the wall? I was afraid a whitewash would make it look like a big blob...lol.

I find the room quite attractive, but the seating arrangement is limited by the small rug. A larger rug would allow your two sofas plus two upholstered chairs. A more colorful rug would take your attention from the fireplace surround (nothing wrong with the surround) and would offer a color or two to use for accent pieces or accessories.

This is the picture I replaced over the fireplace and the photo below is the rug before changing it out to brighten the room. I did not like the Italian Renaissance ornate frame as I want a more current, i.e. pottery barn, farmhouse look and this was not getting it for me. At the moment the unframed picture looks a little lost above the fireplace so I need to get a new frame. So, I am willing to purchase furniture to establish my look, even if it means replacing it all, lol. I want our house to be more current with the HGTV look as I like it, not because it is current, but because I actually like whatever it is called, the Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware or Farmhouse look!

I would wait to see how all the other changes you are making impact the look of the fireplace tile. if still an issue after all the changes, then address.

I wish it were like a recipe that went wrong and I could toss out all the ingredients and start over. However, I think a good starting place is to get two new tables, one for each side of the fireplace. Then review it...

I think a new fireplace door can make a big difference since the opening is so high and right at eye level when sitting on the couch.
