First impression: Overly complicated, so much space, so many hallways, just too much.

Detailed thoughts:

- All these jigs and jogs around the exterior will drive up the price (and will complicate the roofline /make the roofline prone to leaks) without adding any function.

- The depth of the house will create dark interiors, especially in the main living spaces. Said differently, the porches and the bedrooms are going to make the main living spaces dark.

- Foyer looks good, though it's large for a space that's just a pass-through.

- Dining room looks good too.

- The kitchen could be better: it's so large that it's spread out /will require many extra steps. I'm too short to reach /clean that island (additionally, cutting down the island's width will give a little more space between the barstools and the sofa, which doesn't look generous). But I like the pantry; I'd put the door on a swing hinge.

- Problematic kitchen traffic pattern: Anyone coming in from the garage (or going to the master bedroom or the laundry room) must cut through the kitchen. Something's wrong with the doorway between the kitchen and the "back hall"; I think it is that upon walking from the kitchen to the "back hall", you immediately encounter the corner of the vestibule -- uncomfortable /makes the space tight.

- Consider bringing large furniture through the master's small vestibule. I'd fix this problem by adding a door between the master and the back porch. This will also add a fire-safety door. Alternately, you could stretch this vestibule over to include the backyard door /would make the space do double duty and would make the space nice and light.

- Consider eliminating that vestibule (this would also mean changing the kitchen cabinet arrangement). If you move the whole thing over, you're losing probably close to 100 square feet and eliminating this difficult master entrance ... while evening up one of the exterior bump outs. I still think you could do better than this, but it's one small idea.

- The laundry room is quite large, while the mudroom is small (and dark, though I don't see a way to fix that). I'd even these two out.

- So many exterior doors -- did I count six? That's a lot of doors to check every day before you leave for work /go to bed. The spread-out design is pushing you to include all these doors.

- Kudos for adding a closet to the study. Makes it flexible so it could potentially be a bedroom.

- All those hallways in the secondary bedroom wing are going to be long /dark /unpleasant. Overly complicated and not 'specially well designed. The route to the game room is long and takes guests past the kids' rooms.

- The middle kid's room is like the master in that furniture will be hard to bring in through the 90-degree turn.

- This plan is hard to read -- where can guests use the bathroom? I'd nix the two kid-ensuites and go with one good-sized, nicely designed bathroom in this wing.

- Consider your sight lines throughout; for example, upon leaving the kids' wing, your sight line is the refrigerator.

- On the plus side, all bedrooms have good closets, and the big storage room in the garage will work great for seasonal stuff. Do you have linen closets and a place to store cleaning items (vacuum, etc.)?

Final thought: Same as my first glance. Too complicated, too much. This house includes all of today's trends but lacks a good traffic pattern /comfort and function. I'm glad you say it's a design in progress -- much here can be improved!
