We'll defer to Rockin' since they know their local climate better, but every 1-2 years depending on sun, rain, IE rate of general weathering. You shouldn't need to worry about it leaching into the pool at all. The wood absorbs the oil and have never had a complaint. We're partial to Messmer's UV+, but have customers who prefer Penofin. Application is pretty simple.... make sure the deck is clean, roll or brush it on, wipe off the excess..... just make sure no rain is forecast for 24-48 hours.

We are in NorthEast Florida and found we need to re-oil our ipe wood decks every 3-4 months to keep it from graying out. This was still the case 3-4 years after install. Love the look of it oiled but not the constant maintenance. We were told after a year or 2 the need to re-oil would be less frequent but that was not the case for us.
