Kitchen Backsplash Design Help

Hello,

We need help with the design of our kitchen back-splash. We currently have white cabinets, white quartz counter tops with grey. we were wanting a white tile w/ with grey and gold hints (see photo) back-splash with gold accents in the horizontal lines but couldn't locate the right tiles for the gold accents. so now we have a dilemma deciding to keep with the back-splash as is, or replace with marble tile, white subway tile, or dove grey subway tile to give the kitchen some dimension. Should also mention we have the red saltillo tile flooring throughout.

If replacing the tile is an option, I’d do that, not with marble. Shaped tiles can give visual texture, as can glazes with variability. Do you have inspiration images? I love Saltillo tile, but I know it can be tough choosing a backsplash that plays well with it.

Heartbreak city? Honestly, with red Saltillo that was your beginning point for the kitchen, unless a major change to all flooring . It suggests a different kitchen quite honestly. It definitely suggests different tops, and a different feel. Can we see the whole thing? It is really, really hard to advise...........

Might be a good counterpoint to the rustic floor. Too bland at the backsplash could be a mistake. This has some detail but w grout that blends and when counter items are placed the detail will recede a bit so maybe perfect , w strong floor and white everywhere else. Maybe some hardware in a bit rustic feel : iron or pewter. Not sure what gold accents would do for the aesthetic .

I agree with Jan Moyer. Need to see a bit more. You need to decide what the "boss" of the kitchen will be, looks like the countertop. Too much busyness in other elements can just cause visual confusion and detract from something that looks great. You also need to go with the bones of the kitchen/home. Keep us posted.

The mental picture I see which combines red Saltillo tiles and marble-look quartz is chaotic. Is your house Spanish style? We need pictures pronto. Don’t make any more purchases until your Houzz friends can respond to your request for ideas. You ask, we respond.

Thank you for all the advice. Below are some more pictures of the entire kitchen. We are planning on putting down hardwood floors in the near future if that helps.

    Okay..............you are work in process...

It appears you painted cabinetry in an existing kitchen. You have the floor conflict. I hate to say this but you also have a hardware conflict. There was a bit of non logic in combining the two different pulls. Aside from two different looks and two very different feels and three varieties? A cup pull really only works in combination with a KNOB on uppers. Conversely, the pull you chose for uppers? Fine on the drawer bases , perhaps adjusting size,

The floor change: Definitely would have been best at the START of the kitchen.

I don't want to discourage you here, in fact I post it as a warning for others. GET HELP. This and any other reno is your MONEY. Nobody needs their mistakes pointed out to them after the fact. Or to simply get stuck as someone may, when they realize an "oopsie" all on their own! I will hope the doors are going back on the open cabinets. You can't fake floating shelves. I hate that I just typed what I typed. But........get design help. Please we beg. Get help before you throw your labor, your money, anything.....AT anything. I am searching for a good answer to the tile splash. I am tempted to say hold off, and perhaps first fix the hardware conflict. Put the doors back on. : ) Get the micro wave in.

This is why we need info. Is this a new kitchen or just new painted cabinets and counters ? You realixe removing that floor now is going to be a huge issue and IMO until that is done I would not do a back spalsh at all It really is too bad you just didn’t save the money now and redo the kitchen but too late for that I guess.

we painted the cabinets and put new counters on. We are not ripping up the tile. That is a nightmare in itself. We are putting hardware over the tile and our contractor said that would be ok.

we are missing the doors on those two cabinets which should be installed shortly along with the microwave above the stove.

Don’t see anything wrong with your choices....

If you are putting hardwood in the kitchen, then I would address the cabinet hardware. Cup/bin pulls are fine, but NOT with the vertical cabinet handles you have. When using bin pulls on drawers, the other cabinets should have knobs. Change out one or the other. In terms of your backsplash, I never like to mix real marble with quartz. I feel it makes the quartz look fake. Since you have the bin pulls on the drawers, I would stick with a classic white subway tile for your backsplash. Bring several home and select the one that works the best with your cabinet color and countertop. There are MANY shades of white. It will work with your tile floors until replace them, and compliment your bin pulls. Take off the other handles, fill the holes, touch up the paint and install simple knobs. All the drawers should have the bin pulls, even the one where you put a little knob. The knobs go on the cabinet doors.

"We are not ripping up the tile. That is a nightmare in itself. We are putting hardware ( sp. Hardwood ) over the tile and our contractor said that would be ok."

NO..............it is NOT OKAY. The internet will say yes, it's fine as long as the tile is perfectly smooth, level flat, no cracks etc, and then use an engineered product. ..........I would not let a client do it. Your tile meets NO POSSIBLE bad avice standard for any hardwood application.

Leave the tile alone, Run MORE of the counter up the splash, or do a plain white subway with white grout.. Change the hardware conflict.

You absolutely can NOT put hardwood over your tile. Firstly, for hardwood you need flat, level floors!

Secondly, it will then mean your floors are too high in relation to your counters.

Your contractor is absolutely wrong. (Is he licensed?)

Change out the backsplash as Jan suggested and the pulls and call it a day.
