This sounds alarming, are they not following the plans? How do they miss a post placement?

Well, I am not looking at the plans, but it seems odd that the post is right in front of the steps coming down from the upstairs. It is probably only half a foot difference.

The post being placed wrong is yikes! And also something I know diddly about, and i know there's members here wise in these things that can be helpful.

But if it ends up you can't move the post or the walls... Perhaps try trimming it out and painting it up like it's supposed to be there as an interesting detail to round off the corner.

Can't you just cover it all up with sheet rock ..or a wine rack ..just be creative with art , with a closet ..??

I would need a lot more info and a floor plan to scale with all measurements clearly marked all windows and doorways ans stairs included and what you are planning for the space .

I would move the post the 6" needed to get it into the wall framing.

I agree with formulaross20. Just loosen it off and slide it over, you have enough structure there to support it for the couple minutes it takes. Happy HO HO!

The builders failed to read and follow the plans. They should have cut the weld and moved it over if that was possible. Any corrective construction must cost you NOTHING. It seems the only way to deal with the post now is to build a frame around it and box it in. I would consider framing it in quality wood (stain later) to look like a deliberate decorative corner. If that is part of a doorway, it will require a lot more work. It is the builder’s error to correct with no additional cost....and he must do something you approve of.

You can’t just move it over there will be a footing under there somewhere it is holding up the floor above, Just box it in and carry on

We had a plumbing stack in a very awkward spot and didn't want to invest in what it would have cost (lots) to move it. We boxed it in with wood so it is more of a feature.
