Multiple colors for kitchen cabinets

We were thinking of using multiple colors for the kitchen cabinets as follows

1. Darkest color for island cabinet (Mahagony)

2. Slightly lighter color for under counter cabinet (Mocha glazed)

3. Light color for above counter cabinet (Creme glazed)

Planning to use a fairly light color island/countertop and the backsplash. Also light flooring.

Any do's or don't in these choices? Is there any guideline on how to pick colors for cabinets?

It sounds like you go for fairly traditional kitchen. In which case I'd choose two colors for cabinetry -for example an island in a different color, or introduce a hutch in a different color..will depend on the layout etc.

Modern kitchens lend themselves better to more colors, even multiple sometimes, also mix of finishes(wood plus melamine, for example) , that's because imo they have such clean straight lines. Also takes a good eye, and will depend on a layout and such

Agree with Jan-photos would be very helpful

I agree with avoiding glazes. While I love the look, mine did not hold up well at all. I tried to fix some of the wear, esp around the knobs, but it never looked great. Had a professional fix them and it looked wonderful but didn't really last all that long.

I guess I like some traditional aspects but not all. E.g. I don't like hutches. But I do like the traditional styling for cabinet panels.

Interesting point about glazing not holding up. Can you let me know which cabinets these are. .I am considering Grand J&K (and potentially Kraftmaid)

Honeslty, please skip the glaze. It often reads as ordinary dirt. It IS dated. Fine if you love a traditional kitchen. You don't need a ton of colors, goo gahs, bells, and whistles........to achieve that. Raised panel cabs? Great. But all design is editing, and MORE is usually not that.. : ) It's.......more than you need , far more often.

One color below. Very traditional. Even with a simple shaker door.

No matter WHAT, function is first.

NO multiple colors. No gewgaws or anything fancy. NO glazes. Keep it simple.

Glaze sounds like a great idea, and the marketing of it contributes to that (since it adds an upcharge) - except for that the reality is that all you would be doing is making your cabinets look shabby.

Keep in mind that your cabinetry has to go with your floors, counters, and backsplash. When you have two colors of cabinetry, it adds challenge to picking out flooring, counters and backsplash that all go with both. When you have three colors of cabinetry, how will you pick out floors, counters and backsplash to go with all 3? I want to know! :) Seriously though, if you are confident about your eye for picking out all these elements, then two cabinet colors are fine, but if you aren’t, then go with one cabinet color. A kitchen reno is expensive.

No and no glaze on anything Pick 2 colors one for the island and one for the rest same counter on all and glazed cabinets always look dirty IMO Timeless kitchens are ones that are simple
