Subtle blue paint to complement this tile?

last modified: 6 years ago

Nothing like trying to pick paint colors on Christmas Eve! :-D

Painters coming day after tomorrow to repaint a guest bathroom. I was going to stick with Chantilly Lace as that's what the rest of the house has, but decided I want a subtle, light blue-grey or blue-silver color to complement the lighter shades of blue of the shower niche tile:

This 8x5 bathroom has no natural light, so I definitely want to keep the walls light. Aside from this niche tile, the rest of the shower/bath is glossy white tile. The floor is a light slate grey-blue porcelain. The fixtures are polished chrome. A shower curtain is to come, colors TBD.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Look at BM Smoke. It may complement the lighter colors in the tile (which is beautiful).

Try Benjamin Moore's "Marilyn's Dress". Lovely shade of light icy blue. Would be really pretty with this tile.

I agree, BM Marilyn’s Dress would be lovely. If you want to go a little lighter, I suggest BM Misty Gray. Both look great with Chantilly Lace trim. (I have both these colors with Chantilly Lace trim in my house.)

Are you going to be able to get samples before the painter arrives?

I used BM Lily White (really a VERY light blue gray) on my ceiling. I like it a lot.

Personally if it were me, I'd pick one of the rich darker blues and add more lights. Make it dramatic and the darker color will make the tile pop

SW Olympus White (6253) is a nice gray that will pop a subtle blue with that tile..

The floor tile will be more important to coordinate the paint with than the little bit of niche tile that will most likely be obscured by products anyway.

The tricky part is finding one color in one of these individual tiles to give to my painter for sampling. I just found another mesh sheet of this tile and now it seems there are 1,000 different shades of blue-grey and blue-brown! So, I'm picking out my favorite of the bunch, zeroing in on a square quarter-inch of color, and letting him take that to the paint store (Dunn Edwards). Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!

Try looking at this tile by squinting rather than trying to pick out individual colors. You will see that the overall effect is a grey/ blue. Maybe these choices will help but it’s hard to be sure on a monitor.

Sorry, I didn’t see you were doing DE.

It’s funny if I look at the sample of Marilyns Dress on my monitor it has a blue tone but I did a whole clients house in it and not once has it looked blue, just goes to show what is on the monitor and what is in real life can have a very different look.

Yes Patricia Colwell Consulting; which is why any color suggestions on this forum should be taken as just a starting point and not your end result! There is no way to tell if we are seeing your tile in it’s true light as you see it in your room. The same goes for any color ! Monitors are no true indicators of what we are seeing .

One always needs color samples and my preference is getting them from samplize.com. You get 12 x 12” true to the color sheet with a peel off back. You can peel corners back and place on wall in various lights and times of day. No pesky leftover paint containers to safely dispose of either! I have a sample of Marilyn’s Dress. When I get back to my office I will post with a couple others for comparison.

Been trying to post but Houzz app keeps freezing up on me. So let me try again. The first pic shows your tile with Marilyn’s Dress on bottom (largest) and several other choices. With no natural light in your room, you need LED 4000 bulbs to get the most true colors. Your tile looks like it has a light blue overall net impression so care needs to be taken with wall color. Other wall and floor colors are key to your choice. I would go with white grout with your niche tile and Ultra White for walls, ceiling, and trim. Use eggshell finish for walls and ceiling and satin finish for trim.

If you are using DE paint only, and you like a color from another brand, I can do a search for closest color in DE. Just give me exact name of color you like. Also, it would be very helpful to see photos of the room from door entering space and flooring sample.

I used BM eternity in a total matte finish (affinity) and it would be very elegant with this.

Thanks so much for so many great ideas! They're all lovely!

Unfortunately we had a household emergency (first flood--in the laundry room, where thankfully we hadn't installed any flooring yet, so no damage, whew!!). In any case, in the chaos I told painter to just give it his best shot, and he chose Dunn Edwards Evening Shadow. It looks nice enough--a very pale grey blue. Somehow feels both warm and cool! I will post a pic once we get our vanity light in there and hopefully my old camera will pick up the color better.

I will likely repaint in one of the beautiful colors y'all shared above, but that'll be after our higher priorities: window coverings and closets!

    Thanks again!

Your painter picked well- that color looks light and airy! I’d love to see your finished bathroom when you are ready.

Just for reference, I looked up the DE Evening Shadow for the DNA of this paint color. It has a LRV of 80, so very light reflective which is good for your room. It is in the Green Hue family but right on the line between cool and warm (fits your description!) and it is dead center between green and blue green hue families. Looks like a really pretty color. Well done painter!
