How do the adjustable shelves function?

The white adjustable shelves- how do the planks of wood, that hold the shelf up, connect at the back of the cupboard? It appears like the piece I am referring to is like a puzzle piece but I can’t see what it looks like or how it connects at the back of the shelf.
