New Year's Flowers
Happy 2020! I took these pictures in my garden, Finch Arboretum in west Spokane, and Spokane Community College in east Spokane.

Helleborus niger 'Jesko'. I can't believe I have to bait for slugs in winter!
Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox). The perfume combines sambac jasmine and Juicy Fruit gum.

Libocedrus decurrens, the incense cedar. The foliage is powerfully fragrant when crushed

Choysia x 'Bluestone'. The flowers look like citrus blossoms, but have a very different fragrance, and the foliage is also aromatic. Most sources give these shrubs a zone 7 or 8 rating, but they're probably 6B, at least in the Northwest. My 'Aztec Pearl' choysia is 8' tall and shrugged off -3F.
Azara microphylla, from Chile, in winter number 3. Vanilla scented puffball flowers in early spring.
Here's the choysia, with the azara lurking in back, in their east facing bed next to a greenhouse at SCC.

Once, my garden was described by the officials of The Inland Empire Gardeners, in a write up prior to a club tour, as looking as though it had been lifted right off of Bainbridge Island. I grow hardy fuchsias, aucubas, mahonias, daphnes, bamboos, rhododendrons, azaleas, jasmines, Magnolia grandiflora, roses, Iris foetidissima, Skimmia japonica, Prunus laurocerasus and lusitanica (now a small tree), various evergreen ferns, sarcococca, Trochodendron aralioides, etc. I identify with the temperate rainforest look rather than the spruce, pine, and juniper look of Colorado. I'm happy here.
