Rustic Dining Room - 1870

last modified: 6 years ago

Just moved into an 1870 home! We love it. Trying to stay with a rustic/farmhouse style throughout. I would like to keep this dining table and chairs but need to brighten it up. Would love some suggestions! Thank you!

I think it looks nice. I'd do a larger light though. that current one is a little puny. It also needs to be centered over the middle of the table.

these are better sized and spaced

I'd also think about doing some diff chairs, and a rug to lighten things up. here are a few pics to show you what I mean

notice the size of the light. if you can, just do two captain chairs that are lighter, like these. and look at the rug how it adds texture and light

    I like these chairs too.

i love the shiplap wainscot and the slip covered captains chairs. you could try something like this

Thank you! What style rug do you think?

do you like the first two in the pics above?

    or maybe:

    jute or sisal

or something w/some color. and if you did your buffet in a pale color blue like in this rug, it would look beautiful

    Our living room has shiplap.

Also, that old buffet on the right, I would like to change the color to match the decor.

i added new pics above. see what you think

I definitely want to keep a monochromatic neutral pallet. What color should I do the old buffet?

these are still farmhouse, but are a bit more modern looking. You could copy any of these ideas to update your space.

The sisal or jute rug is a biggy. it adds a lot of character to the space

I think the ladder lamp is a bit over the top, but it works here.

I think the main thing that would help your table is the chairs. You could paint them, or at least substitute two diff ones for the ends.

this is the same one as above, but they painted the ladder and put in a diff rug. its still a sisal type, but has a banded border. I also like the table decor. More French Country

    another type of rug.

    same rooms, diff decor ideas

another idea for you table and chair change, is to bring in a bench

you could do a standard one to match the table, or bring in a painted one that matches new chairs,

or even a type of settee

had to reload the pictures above.

as for the buffet, if you want mono, then just do a soft white

    or something like this one

I would change the chandelier to a more period, but updated look. Love this one and it comes in black or brass.

Congratulations! How wonderful you are preserving this amazing home. I don’t think you have enough space for a rug unless you remove the buffet it would be problematic to slide chairs back without hitting edges or buffet. White washing the buffet would be a good possibility. Enjoy the journey. We bought a vintage home built in 1900 and we “restored” it. This home looks in pretty good shape.

I would like to paint chairs in high gloss or laqué black for spindles and legs and leave top and sits as it is

You have lots of ideas here, but I was going to suggest recovering your chair cushions, which are sort of disappearing against the dark wood, with something that ties in with the fireplace tile -- some brighter pale blue, etc. Just another place to bring in some color without changing the style. Forget the tiny wreaths and the mirror in favor of some art too.

How about a red and white check or black and white check tablecloth?

Pick up that blue from the fireplace in fabrics and accessories. I'd go for a farmhouse style light. Maybe a pair of them. Here are a couple of suggestions.

Could you maybe post some photos of your kind of "rustic farmhouse" style? I'm confused by some of the posts above, which look way too formal for that, but maybe that's what you're intending?

Definitely change the chandelier. I'd go for Flo's upthread or the two in the last post. They look like the right scale for your room. Stylistically, the one you have now doesn't belong.

If you're thinking about painting the chairs, I'd do that last. Your current chair color is actually perfect for the period. Actually, I wouldn't change the dining room table, either. It works very well.

However, you need a different sideboard! Do you have inherited dishes or anything like that? If so, I'd get a Welsh dresser. It would give some height to the side of the room where the current dresser is. It should be wood, IMO, not painted or with much embellishment. No need to make it fancy: even "primitive" would work. Definitely NOT gold details on a cream background....you'd be doing pseudo Louis Quatorze: totally wrong for your house.

Whatever goes in that spot, should be a lot less deep than the dresser you have currently. You need to have room for the chairs to pull out, and IMO, the depth of the current is too clunky for the room.

haha... It is a double sided fireplace.

I have an 1851 house that is a hodgepodge of styles and have kept much of my furniture and just made it work. Glad to see you are doing the same. You have a lovely house and great taste.

I'm liking your monochromatic look. Just a few simple changes can make a big difference: Get white seat cushions - they will really pop with your current chairs, no need for new chairs. Get a sisal or jute rug with white binding to bring it together with your trim and white cushions.

Do you use and need a buffet? It looks cramped in there. If you only need something for storage but not for serving, I would consider a tall, narrow, shallow cabinet with glass doors that can disappear more into the space.

I agree the chandelier is too small. I would go for something much simpler like what Flo posted. You could even do it in a black iron and it would be in keeping with a more modern farmhouse look. If you are in love with this chandelier, can you reuse it in another space in your house - an entryway or bathroom?

Is there enough room between your dining table/chairs and the sideboard against the wall?

    Not a Pro.

Not sure if this was brought up....

Have you tried centering the table and chairs to the fireplace and putting the buffet on the opposite wall. Will there be enough space to walk around it, if you do?

Can the buffet be put opposite the fireplace wall?

If not, can the buffet be used in a bedroom and you can look to get a thinner used buffet that you can update with color.

I think valances or drapes on the windows will help bring color into the room.

    ooooh.....pretty!

I would paint the top of the chairs your ....’.main color’.....you want to accessorize with.

It will break up....the brown .....on the floor, table and chairs.

It already looks like your fireplace tiles are hinting at blues.

Or, if you don’t want to paint.....try color cushions. Shabby chic soft long ruffled edge.

Then I would get a farmhouse china cabinet (I like with glass doors).......and, use the dishes to decorate.

Mirror and/or family photos for fireplace decor.

Other have suggested a new light.

    (Real) Silver candlesticks.

Lots of pretty photos were already posted for you.
