If you have a transitional style, I would stick with your first instinct of a marble for the bath. The "so called" new patterned tiles are already "out" on the east coast and will soon be so elsewhere. I love "Hex marble, but you could try a 6 x 12 marble on the floor to create a more transitional look and avoid a ton of grout lines. The marble is a timeless choice.

The first one is my favorite as well. When my husband saw the sample, he said it looked too Mediterranean for our place. So, I was needing a little encouragement :)

Design girl, I love that floor as well, hence my dilemma. I was wondering if people were tired of their patterned floors yet.

@Kitch4me - All I can say is that in suburban NYC, the encaustic patterned tile season is over. Here it's considered very HGTV "Flip or Flop". It will go the way of the vessel sink and some new trend will take its place. I love your vanity choice as well as the gold light. That would be the wow factor for me. You could even consider a fun wallpaper. Lighting, mirrors, etc. are fairly easy to change out - even the vanity is not so difficult. Floors and showers are complete demos which is why I think it's always better to stay safe in those areas, and add the Wow in places easily changed. Good luck.

The marble hex.

The hex marble is classic and would stand the test of time. But stick with black lighting and vanity or cool colors.

I think the fact that kitch4me is in So CA makes a difference. These tiles were never part of suburban NYC architecture, but they were always a part of So. CA architecture, with its Spanish and Mexican influences. We still have local companies that make the real red clay body patterned tiles. It might have been a recent trend in suburban NYC, but has been a staple for So CA older housing stock and people still want to keep that character when they update and remodel these homes.

kitch4me, do you have any other gray in your house? I would want something a bit warmer with that wood floor. Unfortunately since the patterned tiles became a trend, most of the colors have been variations of gray, but there are some tile manufacturers that have warmer whites, cream and tan mixes. Not as easy to find, but they are out there.

Chispa, yes, we had our entire interior painted BM Paper White last year. It’s a very pale pale gray. I wanted white, DH wanted gray, so this was a compromise. DH bath was renovated also, gray tile floors, porcelain marble shower surround.

do a patterned floor. I wasn't sure either when I did my bathroom but in the end, I loved that floor so much...I think it's what sold the house too-everyone was too busy looking at the floor to notice the small nothing bathroom lol. Everyone commented on that floor.

A pattern with black/white/gray small porcelain mosaics would also fit with your house’s style.

IMO a small bathroom looks best with all one tile size and shape. I like an all marble space use porcelain tile that looks like marble on the floors and the shower walls it will make the space feel bigger and if you use all 12 x 24 tiles very few grout lines . It works with your style and keeps it si

I have to agree that first tile is on it's way out. Keep it simple and go the classic last tile. Add a bit black in art, wallpaper, accessories. Things that can easily be changed out.

@Kitch4me - Just so you know, the picture I posted above of the 6 x 12 marble floor was done 12 years ago. It still looks timeless and classic, something the patterned tile will not. Some others posted above are not only making me dizzy, but already out. I think the marble is very in keeping with your style. Good Luck.

I love the patterned tile you are thinking about using. I agree with chispa that they are a natural fit in So CA. They really aren't a trend either-they have been used for flooring in Europe since the 1850's. I agree that the patterns can look busy but I also think the ones you chose have enough light color in them to avoid that.

Who cares what is In or out. Go with what you enjoy and will enjoy for years to come. I love the first tile.

Kitch4Me, I like your first tile choice -- very nice. I also like small hex tile, but your patterned tile will have more personality. At the same time, the patterned tile won't have the staying power of the small hexes.

I just finished remodeling a 25 year old bathroom. I love the patterned tiles but decided not to use them. I wasn't sure I would still love them 5 years from now. I have no intention of remodeling this bathroom ever again and it was too permanent of a choice for me.

Classic and classy. Good choice for a small bathroom.

A choice that enhances its beauty is keeping tub, tile above tub, vanity and shower curtain all nice whites. Then flooring becomes real focal point.

Note here how we used a patterned tile on the floor of this bathroom for a client.
