Do you like the wood doors, panelling and trim in the room? Or do you want to change it all?

I would leave the doors and trim, and prime and paint that paneling. That looks to me to be what is really making everything look off. I would paint the paneling the color of the walls in that room.

The color of the doors and paneling is what I think is throwing it off. I know The doors and paneling have all been painted by the previous owner.

You could look at the backs of the sliding closet doors to see if they have the original finish. If someone faux-painted all the brown, you can paint over it without a qualm, any color you like.

take them off, put them on saw horses (or something similar) and give them a good sanding to smooth the surface. try a 150 grit and work up to a fine sanding of 220 or 350. use your hands to feel how smooth it is. Clean off all residue and wipe clean.

now prime with Zinnser oil base primer. (comes in a can too) give a light coat or two. when dry, gently fine sand again w/220 grit. Wipe off all dust w/damp rag.

now you can paint. get a smooth roller (or get a very good 2-3" nylon brush from Purdy or Wooster) and paint with a semi gloss paint. A good paint that's meant for wood trim.

let dry, put on second coat. if it feels or looks rough, find sand with that 350 grit to knock down any brush marks. wipe clean, paint again
