1940s ranch, exterior help needed

We need to re-paint our 1940s ranch house and I don't like the current black/white look. We have grey roof, and a medium-grey trex porch in the back (which is huge), and greyish concrete. We are in Northern California. A good amount of greenery in the back. I want to do something fun with some kind of bright or colorful element, but also something that won't be too distracting for the older-home neighborhood. Help please?

    Maybe yellow with blue...?

BTW, I meant to say I like your white siding. Maybe just add a bright red door...and pots of red blooms...?

I like the white siding sometimes as well, though I'm not sure about it. I'm really not into the red door thing - I'd like to find a different color. I could maybe get behind the white siding if I found a good color for the shutters and the door. Thanks for your input!

Really nice home and lot. Like the black and white look as is.

Light blue or gray siding would work with gray roof and black shutters; however, if most of the homes in your neighborhood have white exterior siding and you truly don't want your home to look out of place, then you might consider keeping the siding white but add a different color elsewhere.

Perhaps you could choose two shades of your favorite blue or gray -- a pale shade and a bolder shade. Use the more pale shade for your porch indent and shutters but use the bolder shade of the color for your front door and screen/storm door..

The surrounding homes are all different, but all that 1940s look. Some are blue, the ones next to me are white. The idea of two shades of the same color is interesting!

My house is a minty green with white as the accent color. It's different from any other house on our street, but I really like it. Maybe that color combination would work for you.

You can go with wood/cedar color

Well, your choices for a color with the white siding are wide open. Do you have any preferences? Another thing I like is your roof color...very nice and neutral.

My grandmother's house was similar. Painted gray with yellow shutters and white trim.

@chloebud I like the idea of some kind of yellow or green maybe. or a pretty blue? I'm just really having a hard time envisioning it. Thanks for your input!

I think a gray/blue door and shutters would look great with the white. My sister painted her house white, and the door and trim are Tarrytown Green from Benjamin Moore. Looks really nice. In her case, there are no shutters...just a wide trim around the windows.

Thanks! That's an interesting idea - might soften things up nicely.

Love the look of your home as it is now, really quite pretty, but I do totally get your need for a change. I'm sure you'll get some good ideas here, as you already have from celery girl. Will be interested to see what you pick, good luck!

Cute house! Pull a bright blue or teal from one of the pretty pillows and use that for the front door. Remove the railing and beefy box the pillars.re

Remove the scalloped trim over the porch. I might leave the shutters black and paint the window frames the same color as the door. Add some big flower pots to flank the steps.

Just to clarify . . . is that wood siding? The reason I ask is that if it is vinyl or aluminum, it is critical that the colour not change to something that will absorb a lot more light and therefore expand and contract in a way that will make the paint film crack.

Otherwise, I think you house is adorable, but I get the desire for change. When you say "something fun" could you give us a few more hints.

@Elizabeth Minish Design it is all original wood siding. Based on all the feedback I’m getting I’m wondering if I shouldn’t keep the house white and tone down the contrast by doing the porch/shutters in a very dark grey, like a charcoal. So a similar look but a little brighter?

Maybe add some fun color with furniture

Good news about the wood siding.

Your white house is classic.Lowering the contrast of the accents could be just enough of a change to help you see your house with new eyes. Both the asphalt shingles and your concrete sidewalk appear to have a greenish-gray undertone, so I would also encourage you to look at a gray like BM HC-168 Chelsea Gray for your shutters. The front door is a great place to have a little fun and with your very neutral background, pretty much any colour you choose will work. Go with your favorite bright colour for the front door and repeat the colour with planters or plantings.

Lovely house! Keep it white, paint the shutters grey to go with the roof, and either paint the front door the same white as the house, or grey like the shutters, of maybe red or crimson.
