I don't think you need to worry about enclosing behind the steps. I think lattic would look better than siding, paint it brown or any other darkish color. You desperately need landscaping in front of it as well. Some shrubs would go a long way toward improving your curb appeal.

do you mean just do the sides.do you have any examples pictures of landscaping and shrubs.

I think you need to enclose the steps. It gives it a more finished look. I generally do not like lattice to cover under decks, however, the pics that felixgrantham posted are very nice. Good luck.

Totally agree with Felixgrantham. I would put a full tight hedge that is clipped at the bottom of the wood of deck, to add a sense of foundation to the front of this home. Then landscape in front and around. I agree with terimc that you need to enclose steps for a more finished look. Although I like the lattice, as this is the front, I like the hedge coming up to the bottom of deck as it looks more substantial once filled in than the lattice.
