We are planning to build custom cabinetry in our garage and decided to go with cedar wood because cedar has great resistance to heat, humidity and bugs.

Although it is a resilient wood, it still requires some basic care.

I want to make sure I buy the right primer and paint for it.

I know cedar only needs sealing, but I'd love to have painted garage cabinets, and not a wood look.

Someone told me that buying the best primer and paint is essential and it will protect the wood. Especially in hot and humid Houston. Our garage is not insulated, and it can be in the high 30s here in the winter and very hot 90s-100s and above in the summer. Very sticky and muggy.

I am worried about the cabinets shrinking and expanding and the doors warping over time.

Would it be better to use an exterior paint?

For example what do painters use on exterior wood shutters that are blue or green?

I am planning to prime and paint myself, so I definitely want to use a water-based paint too.

Our painter used SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel Satin for the cabinetry inside the house, and I am impressed with the results. Water-based paints came a long way. And since I want to use light color in the garage I don't want the paint to yellow overtime which can happen when using oil paint.

Any professionals here who can suggest a good product? And tips for prep process?

I am painting it myself to save money because painters cost an arm and a leg...and it is a garage so it does not have to be perfect, but I don't want to cheap out on the paint because I want the cabinets to be protected and last a long time.
