Open wide ...........

last modified: 6 years ago

How wide can you open your mouth?? The average range of motion in the jaw is the space of three fingers (like they measure for dilation in labor). I was asked this today and it has launched a day of people testing their abilities. My daughters even sent pictures of themselves.....

so how many of you are trying it right now???

Is this a Facebook thing? If so, makes me glad I'm no longer a participant there!

    ;-)

OMG Just what we need people doing with the onslaught of the coronavirus.

Not a facebook thing. My dentist asked me and it sparked a funny conversation today.

And here you ran into two wet blankets!

    I could do three.

    I can't do three.

    I can do four...

I thought yaya was the third wet blanket....

Four and room for another. This is awkward...

I am picturing every one of us with our fingers between our teeth. Three plus a little for me. Lots of jaw snapping sounds while opening wide.

I have Trimus and cant open any wider than 1 1/2 on a good day. I'm thinking we may need photographic evidence for over 3 lol!

I need the baby-sized everything at the dentist.

You do mean top to bottom - not side to side, right?

    Three fingers.

I am unfortunately remembering a sitcom (possibly the "ever-classy" Two And A Half Men) wherein a man was remarking on a woman who could fit her entire fist in her mouth, so ... Yeah. Sorry for the knee-jerk wet-blanket reaction! (But agree that putting hands into one's mouth is not the thing to do during flu and Coronavirus season.)

    Top to bottom Rory

Four fingers here, and my cats are hiding now because it scared them.

ETA: this reminded me of that old video of the woman doing hilarious face flexing (for anti-aging):

Three, and tried it because I just got home and always wash my hands when I get in.

Four, I tested immediately after washing my hands for 20 seconds.

I would've killed for that hair in the late 70s. (** hanging head in shame **)

I had hair that big in the ‘80s. Just came across a pic recently. Blue eyeshadow, tanning bed baked skin. 😔

I can do three fingers vertically and and entire hand horizontally. I can't see why it matters where this originated as long as you insert a clean hand, ideally in private.

Someone asked me how far to insert her fingers. As I said just the tips, I heard her gag.....lol. I’m still chuckling at the responses this question has elicited.

four, and FYI, do not attempt this test if there is still any salad in your mouth. 🤣😱

Bunny, I mentioned Facebook because it sounded to me like some of the "challenges" I saw people latching onto and posting about. Insert away! ;-)

Three for me, but then I read the comments and got competitive and tried again. So, I can now honestly say "four", but wonder if my jaw is going to ache later...

Is a measurement we use to predict difficult intubation (placing tube in trachea). Smaller opening = more likely difficult procedure. If having surgery with general anesthesia, this should be checked before sedation.

CAUTION folks, TMJ dislocations can be very painful and may require medical assistance (e.g., ED visit) to reduce.

Careful folks don’t want any injuries

I can do three plus a bit. But my sister can put her fist in her mouth as well. I've always wondered why she even decided to try it.

I'm laughing out loud at this thread. And the lion face exercise! DH came in to see what I was chuckling about ;0)

And I can insert three clean fingers, but I have small fingers....

I just did 4, and Rooney the dog that was laying next to me got right up...I think he thought, 'If she's eating something, she's bound to give US something.'
