Gift orchid question

I received an orchid as a gift. It is a phalaenopsis. It came potted in spagnum moss. It is currently in bloom, but I don’t think the roots look very healthy. I removed some of the surface moss to check on them and can see that some are dried and hollow. I had phals years ago, and don’t remember anything about growing them in moss. Is that good? I’m assuming I should wait until it is done blooming before I try to further investigate the condition of the roots? They seem very tight in the pot. I tried to stick a skewer in to check the moisture level, but couldn’t do it.

What‘s the best course of action?
