DIY Kitchen Update

Hi y’all!

Moving in to this house soon and looking for some advice on how to update this without a full remodel. Should
I go cream or white cabinets? Eventually I’ll tackle trim but don’t have the bandwidth for it yet - would a new color on cabinet clash terribly with the honey oak trim Obviously we will be updating appliances soon. Suggestions? Thank you!!! :)

White is not right color. It would clash with countertop. Pick color from granite . I actually like existing cabinets, maple color?

new countertops and appliances will make a huge difference. Maybe with less motion.

I'm not fond of the lemony-lime coloured counter tops and backsplash. I think you could leave the cabinet colour alone (clear maple is always a good option when PERFECTLY paired with a maple floor = your situation).

An updated counter top/backsplash will go a SUPER LONG way in keeping this kitchen looking fresh and modern. You can look into adding some fantastic hardware to update the look as well.

New counters + new backsplash + new hardware = roughly the same cost as painting out the cabinetry. And new counters, etc, will offer less of a disruption to your life.

Right now your cabinets are perfectly paired with your floors. That is a really good thing. The 'blah' factor (or in my eyes the 'ick' factor) is the countertops. Change those and you have a brand new kitchen that still looks stylish.

I call this the 'most for the least'. The most amount of change for the least amount of pain.

I agree with everyone else. The cabinets are fine. Spend the money updating the countertop, backsplash, and cabinet hardware. (Appliances too)

Good advice above. I would price out changing the countertop and backsplash before painting the cabinets. You’ll probably like those changes more than painting the cabinets. the countertop is pretty dated. Are the cabinets in good shape?

Thanks for the input guys! I had it in my head that white cabinets were the only thing I liked but I’m looking at pictures like these and getting inspired in a different, less paint heavy direction... maybe I’ll do white tile walls and countertops and open up a wall for shelving to lighten it all up. Thanks again!!

I would leave it alone completely and save your money for a complete remodel as I dont think small changes are going to matter much. A full remodel will let you get rid of the strange angled layout, the dated counter behind the sink, that awful double sink, and let you put cabinets up to the ceiling. IMO living with it for now won't be that bad and ever penny you spend now will just delay getting the kitchen done right.

I agree with saving up for a remodel, if you can improve the layout significantly - otherwise, if that is out of the question even in a couple of years, I would change the counter and backsplash - and the paint color on the walls doesn't seem to compliment anything either, so think about repainting there instead of the cabinets.

I would not spend one penny on that kitchen until you live with it for at the very least 3 months then decide what needs doing.

Just a warning about opening up walls. Flooring will be missing under walls and under cabinets. That means you will have a 'flooring dilemma' as soon as you remove 'something'.

If you haven't lived in the home yet, it's a good idea to leave everything alone for 3-6 months. Once you've lived with the set up, you can decide what goes and what stays.

Short term I would just paint the walls. I would pull a darker color from the countertops. And replace the refrigerator with stainless to match the rest you have. Look for sales. Live with it for awhile until you know how the layout works or doesn't work for you. I wouldn't paint the cabinets especially if they match the trim in the rest of your house. bring in color in accessories.

Get cabinet pulls. It will change everything. I hate that I can't edit or add to my post rom my old tablet.

I would keep the cabinets as they are but replace the counters if that’s in the budget. If that’s too big an expense for now, then paint the cabinets to match the lightest color in the granite. The green in the counter is a little bit too much for the cabinets now. You can also break up the expanse of the floor with runner rugs in the areas where you stand a lot.

counter depth fridge and add pulls. Quickest bang for your buck.

Thanks everyone! I think the plan is to live in it for a while, likely adding pulls and new appliances, then we will likely end up redoing the backsplash/counters. I think resale will be better if we focus on getting rid of the crazy granite... at least then if we don’t get to painting the cabinets the next owner can choose their paint and such based on neutral counters as opposed to based on that overwhelming granite.
