Is it ever too cold for weeds? I don't think so. This is part of the area I cleared weeds on the left, but look at the right! Weeds galore. I had mulch stacked and ready to spread , but it was ant infested so I had to spay it and let them leave before I put it out.

Some of my mini green-houses. the sun reaches them and they get rain through the open valve at the top, but late freezes won't harm them.

We have had a few warm days, but I could only pull some weeds near the edge of the beds. Too wet to do much. If it warms up enough, and stays dry enough I am going to be spraying or I will never get the weeds in control. Not that I ever manage to totally get rid of weeds, they multiply too fast.

We had another round of snow but just enough to cover everything again. It is melting quickly. Suppose to get into the low 40's tomorrow and be in the low 60's on Monday.

We have had an overabundance of rain this year too, but my beds have been mulched so many years that this clay soil is not a bog for long...The paths, on the other hand are a mess, but the stepping stones and the Slogger shoes handle that, Unfortunately, more rain is coming tomorrow. Brad, your knee has healed sufficiently to make pictures more fun this year, hasn't it? Nancy, I had pulled that stinking little weeds all winter, but this is the time I have to get them all out since they make huge clumps very quickly when it gets warm. Julia, I cannot imagine frequent snows since we rarely have more than a dusting, but that is one of the things that makes the forum fun and also allows us to see how the other part of the country gardens.

We managed to get out yesterday and hope to do the same today. It was sunny and about 50 yesterday, but is supposed to be sunny and 60 today.

We cleaned up some of the seedling beds. We also have to go through the seedling beds with maps and replace some of the tags. The wind or deer manage to knock some over every year. It's easier to replace them when the plants are not up. The daylilies are beginning to grow. It seems a little early but we also had a mild winter.

All f mine are up now but have a lot of growing to do. I really wish we could have a bit of warm weather before the lilies break the surface, but that doesn't happen since they are always in a hurry. Thankfully you have plants in the greenhouse. Ants gave me problems in my greenhouse this year. They actually killed one of my plants before I realized it was an infestation.

Personally I have learned to embrace the weeds. With 42 separate gardens even if I am out there everyday weeding I never get them all cleared so I consider it added greenery . Mind you I do try to eleminate the weeds in all gardens but doing one and moving onto the next , by the time I get back around to a particular garden it has weeds AGAIN . So yeah, I have learned to embrace the weeds.

Hannah, I have to mulch to prevent most of recurrent weeds. Weeding just cleans the bed temporarily for me, but the mulch generally keeps them pretty clean but it a lot of work and 42 gardens would limit the amount of mulching possible.

Heather, I have 8 flower BEDs and can't seem to keep them weeded. I don't know how you do it! Of course, my biggest flower bed is iris and peonies, and not supposed to mulch iris. I try to keep that one knocked back, but for the most part, I do as you say and embrace the weeds. Joining the weeds among the iris are reseeding coreopsis, verbena bonariensis-totally incorrect spelling I know-and rudbeckia. It does not look so bad from a distance, but up close, yowzers! Mulch does keep most of the weeds out, but I am seeing more grass growing in some beds, don't know where that is coming from, but it is growing right in some of my daylily clumps. Looks like i will be digging those up and replanting. Some big clumps so I see some fun ahead. Grr...

And, for me, that grass growing in the middle of huge clumps is usually sage grass (broomsedge), Johnson grass or Bermuda grass-none if which can be eradicated except by digging up the clump!! Left alone any of these will eventually take over the clump to the point of extinction. Trust me, I know!!

Did it again, didn't I Heather..I have no idea why I continually scrambe4l your name. I did get out and mulch the first little area, DH had covered the mulch with a tarp when my shoulder kept me from spreading it last year. at least that section should be weed-free for a minute or two. Nancy, those iris are a killer since you can't mulch, aren't they? Kate, the stinking weeds have really enjoyed the rain, haven't they? Is your Explosion in the Paint Factory tiny or is it growing great guns? Mine is tine and so is Get 'R Done, but they look healthy.

Kate, I don't know what kind of grass it is that is growing in my daylilies. I have that sage grass growing in my iris bed, not too bad right now but I did not take it in hand las year so I may be in real trouble this year. I had a bed with Bermuda grass, I dug everything in that bed out. Sprayed it continually over the summer, no sign of Bermuda so next spring replanted. After 3 years it reappeared, I have been trying to rid it, and not bad right now, but I am trying to catch it every time I see a bit of it. Seems like every year there are more bits though.

Whatever the grass is I am having problems with, not quite regular grass, not deep rooted like Johnson grass. Not really hard to pull out, but it is determined to grow with certain daylilies. A couple of years sho it was in Malaysian Marketplace. I pulled all the grass out, but apparently damaged the daylily itself and lost most of the clump. Decided then I would just dig up the clump if I saw it again.
