Rose recommendations for an indoor home garden

Hi there!

I live on the Northeast coast here in the US. I'm looking for some recommendations on the types of roses I should buy that are:

White or lighter shades of blue and red/pink
Lower maintenance and doesn't require me to water them very frequently
Able to survive longer without as much sunlight

It doesn't have to fulfill all these requirements, but any suggestions that best fits these criteria are welcome!

Hi BC C, I would suggest looking at other plants. Roses don't do well as house plants. They like to go dormant in the winter, for one thing. The good news is there are a ton of great flowering plants that you might be able to grow in your conditions (some with supplemental light). Have a look at Jasmine Sambac, orchids (so much variety there) African violets, and Clivia. Of those Clivia, African violets, and some orchids will be best for the conditions you describe (low light, infrequent watering). The hybrid phalaenopsis orchids available for very little money at Trader Joes are a great place to start. I got a mini phal for 6.50 at TJs the other day. There are tons of other orchids -- some of which are fragrant -- but they have very different light requirements so be sure you can give the plant enough light before you acquire it. (There are fragrant phalaenopsis, and you *might* have enough light for them too -- something to look into). Roses are my #1 love, when it comes to plants, but I think any of us would be happier with a well-blooming orchid or violet than with a dying rose that refuses to bloom. Good luck!

In what State and zone do you live? South Jersey is a far cry from Buffalo and different roses would be required if the latter. The nearest large city would allow better answers. What is your average rainfall as all roses need fairly plentiful water to thrive as opposed to survive? How much sunlight throughout the summer and during what time of the day is it received? I'm also realizing this is for an indoor garden. Do you mean a greenhouse or just next to a window? A window wouldn't work out long term as roses need a lot of space and light.

Are you seriously suggesting growing them indoors? Roses are not "house plants". Some miniatures have been raised indoors under grow lights which are kept on for upwards of 16 hours a day. It can work, but it isn't great. Plus, insects such as spider mites can be horrible problems in those conditions. They hitch rides on you, your pets or just blowing in the air and once you have them, you will play the devil trying to rid yourself of them. The closest you will find to what you appear to be asking for would be florist types successfully grown under glass in northern climates, but those conditions are FAR from "indoor conditions" in a traditional house.

I'm around the NYC area. Unfortunately I can't grow them outside as I don't have an outdoor garden.

I'll be placing them beside the windows inside. I can get a grow light for more exposure. I'll be watering them manually myself. I know it's not ideal, but any suggestions on rose types or setup would be much appreciated!

Hi there BC - I wanted to chime in based on my limited experience :) I bought some miniature roses thinking I could grow them inside in a garden window that basically gets full sun all day (faces south/southeast). It did not work out well. They did okay during the summer months but never really thrived. By the end of October they had all died. I know roses aren't houseplants but they were so cute and only $1.99 so I thought, let's give it a try. I wish I had planted them outside. Good luck.

There are many indoor flowering plants that would work better as other have suggested. do look at streptocarpus and abutilon for colorful long blooming options. Also, there are several double kalanchoes that have rose like flowers.
