bathroom mirror

We have a 113 and 1/2 inch vanity in our master bathroom. The large builder mirror failed and now we are looking to replace and update. With two sinks and a makeup sitting area in the center we are confused which way to go. Maybe three mirrors with side lights or three high set lights. Another option is back to the large one piece mirror with maybe a frame. Any ideas???

Hi - our master bath has a similar vanity/ mirror design, although probably only 2/3 your size. We tried dual mirrors but it ended up looking way too busy, especially with the lights mounted through the top of mirror. Ended up with the full size mirror, and then our carpenter built a “picture” frame to go around entire mirror. mitered the corners, actually looks Like a frame. Painted to match tower cabinets on either side. Very simple and clean look, we really like it. Sorry I’ve never figured out how to post a photo or I would show ours. Good luck!

so everything else is staying as is? you just want to change the mirror?

you mentioned 'updating', so I wondered if you were doing anything else.

that vanity area has some great potential, even by working w/what you've got.

right now your current lighting is sub par. are you willing to update that as well? (it's sits far too high)

ignore all of these styles except for the mirror and the lighting. they could all be used w/your vanity.

do two separate mirrors with well placed lights over each one. for your makeup vanity, you'd just have a nice make up mirror. I doubt you use the big mirror to put on your makeup anyway. but if you do, you could always put a third one in the middle.

one large mirror w/a large light over the middle, or over each sink

forget the overhead lights and do sconces. (better lighting for the face)

the mirror you have? have it cut down to two separate pieces, frame them and mount over each sink. get new lights and have them lowered like shown here.

this is most like yours, minus the sconces. frame out the mirror w/simple trim work. paint it. get new lights.

I'd also paint that vanity and paint the frames to match.

same idea, but tile that wall. paint the vanity. (and get a new countertop if you like)

Hi Pamela I would do one of 3 things. All would work equally well its a matter of preference and budget on your part.

    1. Replace with a sheet mirror and this time take it all the way up to the ceiling. Place lighting on top of mirror like seen here. In your case whether overhead or sconces I would make sure they are good sized. you would have 4 sconces.

    2. Do a sheet mirror as above but then add glass framed mirrors on top of it for more depth. Lighting would be above or again 4 sconces, Showing this for the mirror layering. See how it separates the above sink mirrors but still gives you an overall mirror to use at the vanity.

    3. Frame out the entire area with molding as seen here. This will make it possible to have 3 separate mirrors without it looking too busy.

You also have the choice to do some drop down lighting in the form of pendents on any of these options if you like this look.

Here is one that is using a different shape mirror over the vanity to change up the look. Personally I don't think this would be a great look for your space because your vanity area is at the same level as your sinks. Notice in this photo the center area is lower.

same with this one the center mirror is longer to break up the look because the counter drops down at the center.

I think I'd get another single large mirror but frame it in the same material as your cabinets. I might also consider replacing your bath lights with an option that's a bit more interesting and less like you went to Home Depot. Restoration Hardware has many nice options, as does Rejuvenation if you want to keep the pricing reasonable.

If you want to splurge a bit, have the mirror cover the entire wall and do cut-outs in the mirror to hang the fixtures. Like this:

When you said the mirror 'failed' do you mean that it is desilvering? If so, you can add a frame to your current mirror to hide the black spots around the edge of the mirror. Just an option if you don't want to replace the entire mirror right now.
