When do you remove azalea/rhodie protection?

I protected my azaleas and rhododendrons for the first time last year, mainly because they were newly planted in 2018 and nearly died during the winter of 2018-19, a hard winter for all gardens. I've got burlap up, but many of them are also covered in leaf litter, etc. so they are not getting much sun. I'm worried about them not getting good sunshine now. Should I remove the winter protection, or is it too early? I'm really zone 5 on the coast, so I can get some really good winds as they switch for summer season, and we are always a couple of weeks behind everybody else. Spring seems to be early this year!
