Staying fit

We are walking once a day and I try to do 30 minutes of toning using youtuber videos. Aside from yoga matts and some small hand weights, we don't have any gym equipment. I've been doing this weightless arm workout followed by her leg and butt workout. I showed my teaching partner this workout and she did not like Holly at all. I don't mind her, but there is another weightless arm routine I like on Blogilates and I do an intense ab workout on Psychetruth.

What are you doing?

    Got my bicycle tuned up!

Doing virtual Zoom Zumba from the studio where my sister goes in Buffalo. $5 per class.

Bought 1-5 lb dumbbells and yoga blocks

    Have a treadmill workstation

I'm walking at least 5 miles a day, hula hooping for 20-30 minutes, and doing a 15-20 minute weight routine most days.

Hoping to come out of isolation in better shape.

I'm still trail running. They are a 5 minute walk from my house. I run in a group of 5-6 but we are going to start breaking it down to groups of 2, we'll meet, say hi, talk about the various routes, timing, and then break into groups.

I have 15 and 5 pound weights and a yoga mat so I've put together some routines. I do miss the gym and my gym friends.

I found this video which I like, it doesn't need any equipment except for a chair.

My routine is the same as it was before the isolation, but instead of finishing by 10:00 a.m., I try to finish by 12:30. I get 10,000 steps in on my treadmill six days a week and lift weights every other day.

For me, and especially at 72, exercise is the most important thing I do. There are days when I really don't look forward to it but then I realize how lucky I am to be able to do it and not take it for granted because I AM able to do it. I have always been active and I figure if this virus or any other thing is going to get me, I am going to be in the best possible condition to fight it. If I lose the battle, at least I tried. Plus I can eat more :-).

Airdyne exercise bike - 45 mins

Chris Freytag Yoga Weightloss Workout for Dummies - 35 mins (video rec'd by friend who is a yoga instructor - we've been doing this for years)

    Walk outside - 45 mins

I alternate between these - one each day. I will probably start doing two of the three some days since I can't go anywhere. If anyone hasn't tried yoga but would like to I highly recommend this video. We got it on DVD and transferred to ipad/phone years back. DVD isn't as common these days and I don't know if it's available in a streaming format. It's available on Amazon but way overpriced - better options on Ebay. It's a good cardio and strength workout and you can break into it gradually. I'm an above knee amputee and I easily adapted it to my capability.

I’m walking outside for 45 minutes to an hour every day if the weather is good. If not I’ve been walking on the treadmill or using a video-Zumba, or Leslie Sansone’s Walk Away The Pounds series. She has some that include resistance bands and weights. Never thought I’d say I miss the gym but I do. I definitely push myself more at the gym.

One of our local Pilates studios had started an Instagram "March Mat-ness" on March 1, totally unrelated to the current situation. Each day they'd post one move, adding one each day, to a complete routine by the end of the month. No equipment. I started, but of course by day 3, as usual, I lost motivation. I was still going to the gym, though.

Now it's just a couple of 2-mile walks with DH each day. Not power walks, either, but I do my best to work muscles while we walk

I have a home gym so I am keeping up with exercise. Given my increased down time, I have been more diligent about my workouts.

Usually my Pilates teacher comes once a week to give me a lesson. I have a reformer at home. When I canceled her I told her I would pay her half until this was all over, and then she started offering Zoom mat classes. I took my first one with her today and it was much better than I thought it would be. So I struck a deal with her that I would continue paying her the weekly amount for my home private lesson, and in return she would give me twice-weekly private mat sessions on Zoom. I thought that was a win-win.

terez HULA HOOPING! I want one!

ETA I am still walking outside with the free Peloton app. Love it.

I have an active dog who requires a couple of walks per day, plus my own speed walks = about 15K steps per day. I am also keeping up with my 2x weekly kettlebell classes via zoom. The gym owner offered to lend out bells to members but I have a couple at home that seem to be sufficient. I also just added a free trial of jazzercise on demand thinking I would hate it, but I actually enjoyed it. Like others I'm trying to stay fit and strong so that I can fight this if I am exposed. With pretty severe asthma, I'm in a higher risk group.

I wish I could still hula hoop...have tried and can't seem to get the motion back (loved it as a child). Any tips terriks?

terez HULA HOOPING! I want one!

I'm sure that quite a few people remember years ago when I started hula hooping. It's great indoor exercise, and goes well with Netflix. 😂

I ordered this hoop for my son's fiancee last weekend, and it was delivered yesterday. They live in NYC, and I thought that she would enjoy another form of exercise in their apartment.

Hahahaha done! But I'm starting with the petite size. Is that cheating? ; )

I have been way off my game for a few months. I’m turning into a beast. I’ve decided to study Kav Maga for something new.

    —------------------------------------------------------------

The petite size will actually be more difficult! With hula hoops the larger and heavier the easier they are to use, because they create more momentum, and you don't have to work as hard to keep it going.

My routine hasn’t changed since my main exercise is running 6 miles a day, and I am able to do that most days. However, in a stroke of great timing, we got a Pelaton bike the first week of February. I’ve been mixing up my running days with biking days on the Pelaton. I am finding I am really enjoying the sense of community with other Pelaton users. Plus, there are more classes than just cycling...the app has stretching, strength training, even meditation. The whole family has been using it.

I envy those who can run distances. I ran 1 mile today, and that was my max.😵

I did walk another 5 miles though.

I have the feeling that there will be those who spend their "quarantine" time exercising, and those who will gain the "Covid 19". 😂

County has now closed the hiking trails. They made it official by sending out one of those Amber Alert messages. A bit extreme for my town, as some of the trails are in our back yards and the steeper trails rarely have any people on them. You can't just decide to do a steep trail without building up your endurance ... well you can, but you will pay the price with major leg pains for days!

I guess we'll pull out the bikes tomorrow to exercise the high energy dogs.

Yeah, chispa, some places the popular trails here are so narrow and people are passing each other in close proximity. At least the greenway path is 10 feet wide, so if someone is walking or bicycling, they can be far enough apart in opposite directions. Yesterday I had plenty of room to pass walkers going in the same direction, but I went at 9:30 early. I assume most kids are doing their schoolwork. Oh, and when I was starting up at the turnaround near the construction I lost my balance and fell into the mud and am a little sore today. Still will do Zumba at 9:30.

Nini, I've seen some memes about the Peloton bike woman is happy now that she got that for Christmas. I miss Spin class, but, really it's been good to bicycle outside. I was talking to a guy on the trail yesterday that it's like going from running on a treadmill to outside. Although the pollen is gigantic right now.

Terezosa, I am hoping to be one of those that loses. Not to spend 30 min or so each way commuting is actually beneficial to me. ALso, I've gotten back on the mindfullness eating bandwagon so hoping it all comes together.

New neighborhood, new running routes to discover. I slacked off while we were moving, but no excuse now! We also have hand weights and stretchy bands. And yesterday I pushed the lawnmower for about an hour.

You’ve no doubt heard the saying, “You can‘t out-train a bad diet”....because running burns a whopping 100 calories per mile. Exercise is great....but not for weight loss.

My barre teacher has put together a 30 min barre video and I've found some others on line. Also there are plenty of yoga classes on line too. You tube is full of all kinds of exercise. We have a treadmill that's getting a lot more use now that the gyms are closed and I have a set of free weights and a weight bench and a weight lifting program that helps too. My line dance class has moved to live streaming so I'm still able to attend that as well.

Others are recommending the leslie sansone walk at home though I haven't tried it. Here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SSYX8sIOmM

For mental fitness, I am doing my best to meditate daily, esp outdoors if I can now that spring is popping. We don't have dogs, but my cat Misty loves to follow me around outside, so we go for a "walk" together when the weather's nice too...more for mental fitness for me...sit by the pond and listen to water babble...

I confess to envying others who feel well enough to work out seriously. I've tried twice to stroll on the treadmill and lift some light weights in the past couple of weeks and both times found it draining. Hate to keep harping about the upper respiratory infection I've had, but it took more out of me than I would have dreamed, which is a bit scary. I'm sure I'll get back to where I was in time, but I miss running and lifting strong and sweating! I've remained very strict with my eating though, and am 2.5 pounds away from entering the 130s, where my goal weight lies, so I am encouraged by that.

@User about three years ago dd and I were having to make trips to Atlanta, Dallas, and Orlando on nearly consecutive weekends (or nearly, I think there was a weekend off in between Dallas and Orlando, but anyway.) Two of those trips involved air travel. Somewhere, I picked up the WORST respiratory virus I’d had in years. Typically, my immune system is robust, and any illness clears up quickly. But that one, OMG! The acute symptoms ended fairly quickly, but the horrible lingering cough and fatigue lasted so long. 😩 I had NO energy and the strangest thing was NO desire to run, none. Typically I get absolutely punchy if I have to miss a day...but this thing just sapped me. It took several weeks and an antibiotic for the bronchitis for me to gingerly run again.

Ugh. Just listen to your body. You’ll be back at it again soon. 😊

Thanks, nini. I'm not the most patient person and have been known to push myself too soon, but I am trying to stay busy (well, mostly buried in a good book) which helps to stave off the restlessness somewhat. I'm now on round 2 of a stronger antibiotic and antibiotic eyedrops thanks to this stupid eye affliction, so am trying to just ride it all out.

Welcome to my pity party. ;)

I do a 2 min plank every night before I go to bed. Here's a schedule for how to work your way up to it. It's one of the best all-body strength moves.

To those of you who are doing online videos, does anyone know of a good beginner yoga video that doesn't involve knees? I have a knee that has some weird issue. If I kneel, something gets out of place inside and really hurts when I straighten it back out. Virtually doesn't hurt at all any other time, unless I kneel on it. But in the meantime I really can't do a lot of yoga poses.

Yoga with Adriene has one, but I'd be happy to find others. It's hard to know just by sifting through YouTube, I would like personal recommendations.

I will be very honest and admit I am not one who "likes" exercise. Exercise like a gym, most classes, etc. I absolutely hate a treadmill, and only like an eliptical a bit better LOL. But I know how important exercise is and how it makes me feel. So I have to do things I actually like. Like walking or hiking. I have exercise bands and also do some yoga stretches. I am working on being more limber/flexible. Terri - I do think I might order a hoop though! I thought about it before when you were hooping, but never did. Now's the time!

aok, I don't have that issue so can't provide a personal recommendation, but have you tried looking for chair yoga? I'm sure it would be much more gentle on the knees.

I’m walking an hour a day. I’ve been forcing myself to take different routes each day instead of my usual standbys, and it’s been great to wander through different parts of town. I’ve been taking a lot of photos on my phone of reflections in puddles, shadows, signs of spring, etc. I usually walk with friends and gab the whole time. This feels more “mindful.”

With the rain coming, I’m going to do some yoga with Adrienne on you tube and maybe check out some videos my gym has posted online too.

I just ordered one of the hula hoops on Etsy!

IdaClaire- Did the doctor prescribe an inhaler either a steroid or albuterol or both? If not you might want to ask if they are appropriate for you. The steroid helps reduce the inflammation in the lungs and the albuterol is an immediate dilator and is usually only used for sudden onset of shortness of breath. I am not a medical professional, just someone who developed asthma in middle age and have now moved into an oxygen diffusion issue. I was not a smoker. When I get bronchitis both of those inhalers give me immediate relief while I let my body heal. In addition, any upper respiratory illness makes me exhausted and takes weeks and often a month before I feel myself and I am a very active woman.

Marlene, I like your thinking. I'm keeping my usual everyday walking schedule and it makes me feel so much better. I'm so grateful I'm able to get outdoors and breathe in the fresh air. My mood always improves 100%.

Sue, I'm with you on taking different routes, as much as I can. I often drive to another part of town and explore streets new to me, loving the architecture in older neighborhoods. Today I was keeping nearby and as I was returning home I found this on the sidewalk: Take care, be happy, smile, be kind, be safe.

aok, if you do a search on youtube for "chair yoga", many come up.

I was looking up some beginner exercise DVD’s for a friend and these look interesting. Disclaimer: my personal training certification is long since expired and I have not personally viewed the shown DVD’s. Keep in mind that if an exercise doesn’t feel right you can do abdominal work for that part.

Ten minute workouts. You need a good exercise ball and light weights. Start with no weights or 1lb or 3lb’s.

This is also a short sessions workout dvd.

Bunny, that is great! This was my favorite from today’s walk.

Sue, I love that little saint guy at the bottom.

The darling bluebirds are back and nesting in my birdbox. They lift my spirits.

Hcbm, thank you. My doctor did prescribe an albuterol inhaler and I also received a steroid injection at her office week before last. Overall I have definitely improved but as has been your experience, it's taking a good deal of time to bounce back. Makes me realize that even when we are healthy and fit, aging does impact how our bodies respond to illnesses. That's a sobering reality.

Dang, I wrote a post and it just disappeared when I hit submit.

My Pilates has started virtual classes, at least one per day, so now I can do a mat Pilates, yoga, or Lotte Berk Barre class during the week, yay!

I have been doing some 7 or 10 minute workouts on MyFitnessPal.com. I got connected to this site several years ago through running and now find several useful routines using my kettle ball, body weight, or free weights I have that I can do during the day.

I haven’t been walking or running during the past week since I mostly have been working in the yard every day. But will resume this week since the weather is supposed to be great.

Folks in WW were happy with leslie sansone walk at home videos for rainy days when you can't get outside.

My Jazzercize studio of course had to close for the duration but Jazzercize corporate is allowing free access for 60 days to Jazzercize on Demand for anyone who keeps their studio membership current. Real classes with people in them are certainly better, but the videos are very good and best of all I've been doing them.

I've also been out walking my dog and it's nice to see so many families out walking in the parks and sidewalks (all at good distances).

I've started up with workout classes offered by my health club and also on fitsugar on Youtube. I'm not a runner and I don't like complicated dance-based courses, so these appeal. The app allegedly adjusts the workout to each person and it patches together sessions based on that. Some are a little cross-fit intensive and I've felt it in various body parts.

The dog is exhausted from his 3x a day walks. I've seen some hilarious memes on the all the tired pooches.

aok, I meant to respond to your question about yoga poses and your knee. Have you been going to a yoga studio, or do you know a yoga instructor you could consult with? In a class, you are not generally required to do anything that is uncomfortable or impossible to perform, physically. There are also blankets, pads, and other items many studios have that can help aid the positions in comfort.

I will just add that I too once had a knee problem that sounds like yours. Any time I got down on my knee for a period of time, it would ‘lock’ and be very painful. I finally went to an orthopedic doc about it. Turned out I had a cartilage issue, plus some arthritis. Had minor arthroscopic surgery, about a 3-month recovery, and now it’s fine. You might get yours checked out.
